I think they missed an opportunity not having a couple instances lined up named main 1-5 or something, maybe even have a message pop up when you try to access lemmy.ml routing you to another suitable instance
You're thinking about this like a technical problem at a major corporation. The devs do not control other servers. No volunteer trying to make an instance and build a community on it is gonna want to name their instance "Main 5".
Better that users understand as early as possible that there is no main instance.
This isn't a technical problem: this is a cultural problem. Hopefully one that gets solved with time.
