Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Here's a few that I know of. What other things are commonly running Linux that most people may but be aware of?

Ingenuity (helicopter drone on Mars)
Smart TVs and streaming devices (Samsung's TizenOS and Roku devices)
Smart appliances (Samsung's smart refrigerator)
Digital signs and billboards
My car stereo (Sony XAV-AX6000)
The Large Hadron Collider
FAA Air traffic control and radar systems
Self driving cars

Your car stereo is probably powered by FreeBSD.

Why FreeBSD?

Because it has a permissive license, anyone can use it and modify it without publishing the source. Plus Sony already did that with the PS (it's running FreeBSD), so they're probably not going to reinvent the wheel a second time.

Ah, the permissive license makes sense. Linux would probably be an easier path since it runs on almost anything, there are drivers for all kinds of things, etc. But, there's that pesky GPL keeping you honest.

Well, Chinese companies do it all the time (violate the GPL that is), but who's gonna bring that up in China.

On the other hand, Sony is a major player in the consumer market, plus a well established company in the US, so... yeah, the FSF will take violating the GPL by Sony seriously.
