Joining the party as RIF kicks the bed :')

Rif has been reddit for me for the past 10 ish years now, opened the app today to see error 429.

Good to be here :)

Ngl Jerboa is quite similar to RiF, so I'm definitely settling in well.

[โ€“] Taint_Butter 10 points 1 year ago

Definitely like Jerboa so far. Just spent the past hour searching and joining tons of channels.

[โ€“] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (5 children)

Jerboa stopped working for me today for whatever reason so I switched to Connect and actually think I like it better so far.

[โ€“] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Could be due to the version of the instance you're on. Beehaw is on an older version and Jerboa crashes when you open it as Jerboa is on the latest version.

[โ€“] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah they really gotta make the app robust against old versions of Lemmy. No way all the instances are going to update as soon as the latest version is pushed.

[โ€“] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The reason is 0.18 breaks a lot of features for example captcha. They all waiting for the fix.

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I'm aware, but even so, admins have day jobs and whatnot. Perfectly coordinating every update across the entire Lemmy federation is just not something you should expect.

Jerboa stopped working for me too, I switched to summit, it's a really nice lemmy app too.

It's my fave too but unfortunately has the opposite problem to Jerboa and currently servers that have upgraded to 0.18.1 don't work! Hope they can get it sorted soon.

Edit: This is now fixed, hurrah!

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Jeroba needs Lemmy version 0.18.0, some instances are still on 0.17.4. You can sign up with another instance that's up to date and Jeroba should work.

Using wefwef for now, thanks for the recommendation will give it a gander.

I love how quickly the community is coming up with replacements for apps and the service as a whole that people are used to.

[โ€“] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Is wefwef an android or iOS app? I'm using jerboa, but heard about the virtues of wefwef and wanted to try it.

[โ€“] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

It's a PWA(Progressive Web App) that functions through the browser and can be installed as an application that is just a wrapper around the browser.

All that to say it works on both Android and iOs, using it on Android myself.

[โ€“] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Testing reply from wefwef. What a strange way to run an App!

[โ€“] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hope you've found the install button, it becomes more like a normal app once you can launch it directly from the app drawer instead of through the browser

[โ€“] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah I did. Tbh, I used reddit is fun, and the gesture system on wefwef is a little confusing.

I'm really fucking sad about rif :(

[โ€“] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah, same tbh. I think I still had some hope that the API changes would get reversed even as the announcements from RiF/Apollo kept trickling in. I just wanted to lurk on my favourite app forever :(

[โ€“] Acheron 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I just wish there was a decent iOS app for lemmy that worked on iOS 15.

[โ€“] Meekajahama 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Try wefwef (name sucks). It's a progressive web app so version shouldnt matter.

[โ€“] [email protected] 17 points 1 year ago

Yup. Little pang of sadness seeing it finally gone. I got years of procrastination out of that app.

Very sad to say goodby to RIF after 9 years. Lets get this party started and I got some learning to do in this new environment.

The Dev from Sync announced a new Lemmy app it's actually a WIP. Just wait a few weeks.

[โ€“] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

And it's out now :) It works brilliantly, as you'd expect.

You're all the technology-savvy intelligent ones who figured out Lemmy right away, months ago. I was trying to get into Lemmy even before July 1st but finally figured it out today November 10th! I finally got into Lemmy today. It was nearly as difficult as applying & repeatedly being rejected for competitive employment somewhere. sheesh.
