Rules:
We know Cavill is good at sword stuff. But, if they're doing a remake, they should really do a remake of the TV series instead. Or, at least do a movie remake that leaves the door open for future things the way the TV series did. Cavill also matches the good looking and cool Duncan MacLeod better than the dopey looking Connor MacLeod.
Highlander has such a rich vein of ideas to mine, as shown in the TV show.
First of all, you have immortals passing as normal humans, who have been around for centuries, and experienced important historic events first-hand. That just gives you cool opportunities to retell those interesting stories. It also lets you make them rich easily by just having them deal in antiques.
Then, there's the idea that they don't know they're immortal until they "die", and then suddenly they're in a contest they don't understand that involves battles to the death. The only way to really understand what they are is to meet another immortal, but there's always the issue of trust.
There's also the idea (from the TV series) of secret societies tracking the immortals. Some secret society people could even want to stop / kill the immortals, while others might want to protect them.
Done right, you could even open the door to all kinds of different immortal heroes, like Bond actors or Dr. Who leads. You could have a villain take the head of the old main immortal, then have an ally of the old main immortal kill that villain and become the new main immortal (taking on some of the personality of the original through the quickening process).
