MUD stands for "Multi User Dungeon". They were online, text-based RPGs. Think ZORK, but multiplayer and online. Precursors to MMORPGs, but free.

MOO stands for "MUD Object Oriented" due to the object oriented nature of the programming language used in room and object creation. They mostly ditched the combat and role playing for exploration, education, and user interaction. Sort of like IRC, but taking place in a virtual, text-based space.
