This place is a far worse echo chamber than Reddit, and mods fall right in line. I've seen too many posts get downvoted to hell for simple opinions, and other 'dissenters' get posts removed that should have just been part of open discussions.

I've said this before, even in a lighter tone, and those posts mysteriously disappeared. I'm betting this one will be removed too.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

You will tell people facts and you will get down voted because someone thought it's your opinion

Mods are on a different level of power tripping here on lemmy.world. Just today my comment "rent free" got deleted by a mod (in technology) because "it might offend someone and that might lead to an argument." That was seriously the reason I got from the mod L4S for deleting my comment.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

that sounds like a fine use of moderation to me, it contributed nothing to the discussion topic

idk if you've never used a forum before, but low-effort/low-quality contributions are often removed from discussion based forums.

Even on 4chan, notorious for supposedly having minimal moderation, would likely remove a post like that on the better boards. idk the rules of whatever technology community you're referring to, but I assume they probably want to keep things on topic and avoid baiting and flaming shitposts

This isn't a forum like those that you're used to though, and "the mod didn't like it" is not a valid reason for deleting someone's reply and it doesn't contribute to civilized discussion and it isn't a civilized thing to do in the first place for someone in position of power. Maybe it's ok if you're a mod in your small group chat, for example, it's your room, your safe space, but it isn't ok in a place designed for everyone

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

and it doesn't contribute to civilized discussion

That's why the comment was deleted, Jack. You can make your own shitposting community if you truly believe it to be an injustice, otherwise I think most people would be glad that a technology community would be for discussing technology, and not looking like a YouTube comment section.

It was deleted because of subjective feelings of a mod and it doesn't matter if you support it or not. I have already pointed out the reasons why that's not ok. Bye.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

honey it's a shitpost, even in the wild west they had shariffs

I'm not sure in your specific case; no context, no conclusion. But in most contexts I'd probably do the same as that mod, or at the very least scold the user. Because most of the time, "rent free" is: two types of stupid (ad hominem, assumption), aggravating (it's often a taunt), and noisy (it doesn't lead to meaningful discussion). It's that kind of crap that makes the community less engaging for other members.

@abbotsbury mentioned 4chan; well, that's one of the things that I've seen jannies there removing all the fucking time. (For free.)

No soup for you!

But hey, at least you got a reason. I think the squirrelly bastards just remove most posts without question so they can substitute authority over their lack of nuts.

I've certainly had lesser infractions removed in less time. This must've slipped by the Lemmy police.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Why do you continue to use lemmy.world if you are having that kind of issue?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Damn fine question.

I'm here partly because it seems to be the most active instance. I also don't hate all the assholes that like to mute nonconformists. I actually like to hear some of their output, and often find myself in agreement. It would be nice, though, not to see so many random ideological digs and parroting through threads. It feels like the same brain constantly high-fiving itself on repeated hot takes.

Most importantly, though, I want to leave Reddit. I certainly had similar complaints there, but not to the degree I've so far witnessed here.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That doesn't really seem to answer the question though... why be on Lemmy.world? What does "the most active instance" even mean in the context of federation?

I'm really confused by your response and I get the feeling maybe you don't understand federation?

It doesn't matter what instance you view, post, or otherwise interact with the content from. The only thing that matters is who's federated with whom. In the case of Lemmy.world, they defederate people. From your response, it seems like you'd be better served finding a server that does not defederate or that defederates more to your tastes.

There is literally no reason to be on lemmy.world in the fediverse.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I have accounts with a few other instances. They're all federated with Lemmy.world, and it seems the most active communities stem on Lemmy.world. Posts may not get blocked as often on other instances, but the echos still lean deep in one direction or another.

Just my observation so far.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

What "echos" are you talking about? Who cares if the "active communities stem on [sic] Lemmy.world?" What does it matter what instance you are interacting with the content from? It literally makes no difference.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Reddit is Reddit's echo chamber, Lemmy is "pick your echo chamber".
