MODERATORS

Hi All,

As the Fediverse continues to expand, we're looking at other platforms we can run with our ethos - open federation, user choice, and fair moderation.

We've seen lots of talk about Piefed, and the benefits of the platform, such as better moderation, combining multiple communities into topics i.e piefed.zip/topic/cats, and the ability for users to better control their own experience.

To that end, we've decided to run our own Piefed instance, located at piefed.zip (I know, original!)

This is very much still under construction, but we feel is now able to accept new users, should anyone wish to join.

If you're interested please check it out, or feel free to ask any questions!

PS - this doesn't affect our Lemmy instance in any way.

Probably not for me, but can't deny the popularity. Questions:

How distinct is this instance from piefed.zip? Running alongside on same hardware, different hardware at the same host or completely separate?

How will this affect the donation model? What separation or merging of funds do you have in mind? I'm happy either way, but it should be made clear sooner rather than later.

This instance is run by the same team as Lemmy.zip

this doesn't affect our Lemmy instance in any way.

These two statements are at odds. If the same staff labour is now divided among two instances, then there is an effect. I worry about running into the lemm.ee problem of too few staff to deal with the load of an expanding 'zippyverse'. I know we've added more staff (love you ♥️), but would not want to burn them out. More on the team soon or are you all currently ok with workload?

Best of luck!

Hey, all good questions.

Different hardware, piefed.zip is running on a cloud vps. Still with hetzner so the admin team can access & troubleshoot.

Donations wise, if piefed takes off we'll probably go down a joint .zip dono route, rather than distinctly donating to each individual server. If nothing else, its easier to manage one dono page/setup than multiple. In the meantime I'll fund at least month 1 until I'm happy either way. Lemmy.zip is still my baby and won't be going anywhere. But yes I'll do some comms around that when I'm happy with a solution.

Piefed offers more in terms of moderation and enables a wider "staff" team, which is a level that lemmy is missing, I.e. an instance moderator. We've already started to leverage that, so that the moderation isn't just on the admin team, rather trusted community members can help out. Happy for anyone to reach out if they're planning on switching to piefed and want to help out.

All sounds good. Piefed might not be my style, but pitching into .zip as a collective - whatever form it takes - certainly is.

Though I'm sure you will, please police your community sourced mods effectively.

Onwards and upwards, looking forward to seeing how it all develops :)
