There's always something further east, the Earth is a sphere. California is to the east of new Zealand. The IDL is arbitrary

Nothing wrong with being a bumpy oblate spheroid. Some of my best friends are bumpy oblate spheroids.

There'd still be an East from any point no matter what convex shape it was.
