The beginning of "Up" isn't sad, it's bittersweet. It shows that obtaining the best things in life always leads to hardship because nothing is permanent. The rest of the movie shows you that it's still worth obtaining things that don't last.

I disagree so hard. The beginning of Up is literally the single most sad scene I ever saw in any movie.
And it’s honestly the most lasting impression, it’s just heartbreaking and terrible to see how they never manage to fulfill their lifelong dream.
And while he eventually gets there, that’s just a little comfort in that heartbreaking reality, and can’t fully heal that wound.
