World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

You completely lost me.
The proof is in the pudding;
The price of gasoline means absolute dick at the end of the day. The ratio of median household income to the price of gasoline is what's important. The closer to 0 = more expensive. These numbers are skewed by 1 year and stop in 2024, unfortunately. So that means that COVID is showing during 2021 of Biden's Presidency. But if you take Biden out to account for COVID you'll see that the only other President, during which the price of fuel was extremely expensive, was Bush 2 and that's because we went to War in Iraq which is reflected in Obama's term....
There's absolutely zero validity to your statement whatsoever.
A country can specify use of an official name internally. They cannot compel outside countries to use it. But a leader could tell the government that he runs to use it. If it has laws -- which the US does not -- which can compel people internally to use that, a country could do that. Even in the US, private organizations are not legally-required to call it "Gulf of America".
It's also not all that unusual for names to differ across countries.
We call Germany "Germany" in the US, rather than "Deutschland", even though Germany isn't within US borders.
It's unusual for leadership to require their government to do so, though I'm sure that there are prior examples, probably over territorial disputes. In this case, it's pretty lame -- I mean, this isn't even popular with the American public as a whole, just part of the political theater stuff. It's probably kind of antagonizing to Mexico. But Mexico doesn't have the ability to specify what the US government calls it -- Trump does.
Am I going to use "Gulf of America"? No. I'm going to keep using "Gulf of Mexico", and I expect that it'll be changed back once Trump is out of office (though the whole Denali/Mount McKinley thing might stick).
Which is not renaming. That's not what that word means.
Yes, this is exactly what I've said. Trump spent tens of millions telling his own Government to change the designation of a location that we don't own, and people suck his dick like he did something amazing. He quite literally wasted everyone's time and money for nothing.
This is incorrect. Google, a private organization is legally required to call it the Gulf of America because they're a defense contractor.
This isn't a difference in language. It's been called the Gulf of Mexico globally since 1550. So for 475 years every single country in the world has called it by its proper name, and now, for no reason whatsoever, we call it something different. The sheer ignorance and stupidity of it is positively baffling--most of all because people pretend like it's not a big deal.
Sure it is. It's altering the name that the federal government uses -- that's a rename. It's not renaming it from Mexico's standpoint. There is absolutely nothing about "rename" that requires it specify what some other entity uses. Trump can rename the thing from the US government's standpoint, and the Mexican government can rename it from their standpoint.
Ah, fair enough, that might be true...though I suspect that that's not true of what it does outside of government contracting. Not generally true of private stuff, though.
EDIT: No, I'm pretty sure that you're incorrect. I can't find reference to any ties to their contracting status, and Google's saying that it's their choice here:

I quite literally don't have the mental fortitude to fight with your incompetence. It absolutely amazes me that we live in a day and a time when people like you don't understand what renaming something is. It makes me want to fucking cry--how we could have fallen so far as a civilization...
See my analogy about the school principal. I pray you're smart enough to connect the dots, but I'm not holding out hope.
Of course it's their choice. In the same way that it's your choice whether or not to pay taxes. That doesn't mean there's no consequences if you don't.
Trump named it the golf of America. You can not like it but you can’t deny history.
That’s not even a statement I can respond to but an egotistical blab blab from a place of self ordained authority.
You just showed proof that Trump provided lower gas prices than other presidents.
This is why I hate you people. Like truly hate you. Because you're so incredibly fucking stupid. Trump didn't even rename the damn thing. Not only does he not have that power, but it's not an asset owned by the US. But even if we did own it, he still couldn't do it. What he did was change US official policy to reflect that the Gulf of Mexico should now federally be referred to as the Gulf of America.
You don't even understand what it is that he did. It's tantamount to getting a phone call by your kids Principal saying "hey, I renamed your kid to Samantha" and you being like "well, that's not legal... why are you so goddamn stupid?" and people being like "LOL THE PRINCIPAL ALREADY RENAMED HER, YOU CAN'T ARGUE WITH REALITY! TEEE HEE!" when in "reality" the only thing the Principal did was update your kids name in the schools computer software because it's not possible for someone to rename shit that they don't own...
Yeah. I figured you couldn't.
I even specifically took the time to tell you how to read the chart, and it's blatantly obvious that you not only didn't read me telling you that higher numbers are better for the ratios, but you don't understand it, either.
Intelligence is trying to catch you, but you're just too damn fast, aren't you?
You're arguing with someone who almost certainly upholds the "Fractions Imperial length measuring system is far superior to stupid metric! It doesn't even make sense! Fractions are way more simple!" And wouldn't ever have bought the ⅓lbs burger because obviously the ¼lbs burger is bigger because number bigger durrhurrrrrrrrr
If you hate a random username online, you are experiencing mental health symptoms and may have a warped sense of reality. I don’t think people who refuse to manage their mental health deserve my attention to read their response. You can do better and learn how to communicate better if you want.
Do the gene pool and the rest of the world a favor and fucking die.
While your frustration is shared, and understandable, let’s not start throwing death around like it’s some little thing
It’s not. I meant it and there’s no use pretending.
I’ve lived through enough racist bullshit and had some close encounters with neonazis going further back than the first trump presidency. He certainly emboldened them and both the frequency and severity of bullshit increased during his first term. Most of my life has been marked with more privileged people asking me to pipe down because they simply couldn’t connect with, fathom, or were unwilling to consider how much worse the experience in pockets of this country can be for some of us. There are always many different reasons to defend the status quo, including the fear of breaking an illusion of a much more civilized America. Those at the bottom always take the brunt of the consequences of maintaining this illusion.
Seems that people are barely recognizing the patterns that have been established for many, many years, only because they are now undeniable. Because they have come to a head.
I don’t care about being held to some higher standard in order to appease overly idealistic sensibilities, when the overton window has pushed us back this far to the brink of civil war through double standards. Neonazis are making demonstrations in minority communities, and we have a set of politicians using nazi playbooks to turn this country fascist in record time, following steps openly outlined by them years prior.
Sorry, but the intolerance paradox is real. And I won’t live my life a useless saint. Fuck these morons.
Oh wow, thank you for the elaboration! Now that you spelled it out like that, I have to admit I have very similar thoughts, albeit in different circumstances, so I can’t really say I don’t see where you are coming from.
In fact, you’ve broadened my horizons, even if just a bit, and I thank you for the perspective.
I can’t say I totally understand the circumstances you live under, but I think I understand enough to know some of how that feels. And I’ve expressed the very same thoughts multiple times, even here on lemmy, so that was a little bit hypocritical of me. Sorry
