I was especially fond of M&M 6 7 and 8 as a kid. I have also played the most recent, 10, which while different and flawed in many ways, was still good enough to be enjoyable. I have also liked things like Wizardry 8 in the past.

I did try to replay 7 recently, but I thought that it has not maybe aged too well as the combat was too grindy for my current tastes.

Can anyone recommend something similar perhaps?

Older: King's Bounty

Newer: Songs of Conquest

Edit: Never mind, I thought you meant Heroes of Might and Magic.

Edit2: Maybe Legend of Grimrock? There is also a sequel.

Songs of Conquest is fantastic

Legend of grimrock cannot be paused, can it?

I had seen it getting played, but somehow I think this turns me off. Optional pausing for issuing commands would be perfect, but real time only would be too stressing I believe.

But I'm willing to try if recommended enough.

It's pseudo-realtime; things happen on a tick, but that tick is pretty generous in timings and you can pause the game at any point.

Thanks, I'll give it a go then.

I think you just hit the pause button? If you're in a safe area it doesn't matter too much though. I didn't play the old might and magic games, but Legend of Grimrock 2 has some of my favorite gaming memories from adulthood. The puzzle aspects are some of my favorite parts of it so idk if that says you one way or another.
