World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

How much leverage does this guy have to survive impeachment after declaring martial-fucking-law for no reason?
He learned lessons from trump
His party learned to become spineless pieces of shit from the US republicans
Probably the logic of the ruling party: this president is not great, but if we impeach him now there will be elections and a new president will be elected, this time one from the opposition party. Competent president working for the other party might be considered worse than an incompetent and corrupt one.
I am sure they would vote for impeachment if they had real chances of winning the presidential elections.
Disclaimer: I know nothing about Korean politics, except some recent headlines.
Same, still I appreciate the attempt to rationalize the situation.
His party didn't show preventing the 2/3 of parliament required for the vote to be held. They are planning on trying again Wed.
So if they show up the vote happens and he probably goes down. If they don't show up they don't get to vote on anything.
If history is any indication, he will be reelected.
Because its more complicated than him just being a bad guy.
He did a stupid, very bad move, but it was because the CCP-infected, anti-Japan opposition passed a budget that forced his hand, it would have apparently cut all government funding by a ridiculous degree.
The dude tried to arrest key legislators, including from his own party. This was the world's worst palace coup.
Yup. Absolutely.
The context in which he did those actions is critical though.
That budget cut was 0.7%. I have no sympathy. I will not be surprised when it comes out that this guy is in a cult and his cult leader got their shit cut and this unhinged response was the result.
For better context, here's what was going on with the budget., including the opposition party stopping aid to Ukraine and fighting investments that would make South Korea less reliant on Chinese semiconductors.
At 0.7 percentage points off a 3.2 point increase it's absolutely not what Yoon is characterizing it as and Bloomberg is giving Yoon and his ministers space rent free in that article.
Got a source on that? Google isn’t giving me anything useful
Reliable news channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gccPFeMJiE
Text of his actual speech: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/03/world/asia/president-yoon-speech-martial-law.html Mentioned that their budget cut 4.1 Trillion Won° from things like Disaster Prep and Child Care.
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/world/article-yoon-suk-yeol-declared-martial-law-in-south-korea-what-does-that-mean/
°Google says that is ~3 billion USD, but this Globe and Mail(note: pro-business extremists) says 4 billion.
Is he really a reliable source?
He's quoting the New York Times there.
Which is quoting Yoon's speech, which he can say whatever he wants.
I was hoping about some reputable confirmation of what Yoon's claiming.
Also the guy with that YouTube channel is just having the show for entertainment, his goal is to maximize views, not to be a reputable journalist.
You didnt mention Globe and Mail, which is not quoting him.
Lmao bro what
