or was there iconic scratchy rapid frenetic drum electronic scraping noises before Bowie?

listening to these songs. I kept thinking about Skrillex, but that wasn't for another 13 years.

Dubstep was emerging around that time, way before Skrillex and the particular style of it that he popularized. I think I hear the similarity you pointed out, though. It may be just a coincidence or a deeper common influence - for example the first song on that Bowie album sounds like drum n bass which was a likely influence on early dubstep.

yeah, I've been listening to drum and bass since posting this, and I definitely hear the similarities, especially with the classic drum and bass another comment or posted.
