A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. A showerthought should offer a unique perspective on an ordinary part of life.

It sounds way less offensive to those who decry the original terminology's problematic roots but still keeps its meaning intact.

Aren't IDE drives basically the only thing that used the master/slave terminology?

Icinga2 uses it

Databses used to and switched to primary secondary

Code releses use master, develop...

Its all over software still but transitioning

the master branch in git refers to mastering, the same as the term “remastered”, rather than slavery. I prefer main anyways.

I mean none of these things need to mean slavery unless you’re so steeped in guilt and shame and anger that everything does

Seriously like I literally never once thought about slavery whenever typing “master” until these fucking people brought it up. Like maybe we can abolish the stock market or something, changing master to main is just masturbating

It’s really a trivial change and if there’s any possibility it contributes to a hostile industry, why not? I’m not going to tell other how they feel, nor is there any real downside.

If it helps get me a more diverse candidate pool I can hire from, even better

A master-drivetrain and a slaved-drivetrain .... its not about slavery. I dont understand why people have to be so sensitive. We know human slavery is bad. So we dont do it. Same for a lot of instances of Animal slavery which is acceptable for a lot of people, we dont call it that, it is called "farming" or "husbandry".

btw Im just kidding, I wanna trigger a vegan into a response :-D

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

So rename master-slave to husband-cattle? You’ll trigger more than vegans

I mean I agree that most of our food-based practices are terrible and I still eat most meat so maybe I’m just a hypocrite.

We can do both. I see what you mean in so far as "washing" like pretending that we fixed something when we really didnt, but I dont see it as a big deal, I mean, like I said elsewhere, I'll try to switch.

Its sometimes little things in your vocab that cause you to stop and realize how ingrained certain aspects of our culture is.

But yeah, its not a solution. Theres a lot of things like it that you just do because its easy and you can.

Bluetooth used it as well, but have now switched to central/peripheral.

Nah, industrial communication protocols in the IT industry uses lots of master/slave terminology. E.g. Modbus and Profibus DP comes to mind.
