It doesn't help if vegetation is covering them, which I suspect is commonly the case after a bit, but I am wondering if one could use multispectral imaging cameras to identify them more easily. Like, the plastic in their bodies may reflect or absorb light much differently at some frequencies than the vegetation in the area.
