I don't like to judge other people's actions but after all of the warning signs:

Technically it’s about how she was paid, not about the keeping quiet.
It’s legal to pay someone to do something and pay them to not talk about it. NDAs are already a thing. You’re just not allowed to pay for it with campaign funds, it’s expected to come out of your own pocket

There's a tradeoff between precision and conciseness. Outside of a mathemadickal context, it doesn't really matter whether it's 2.72 or 3.14 inches.

Actually, no, it's not. It's not illegal to pay someone to keep quiet. It is illegal to use campaign funds and lie about where that money is going. That's what this trial is about.
