So check it out, and make sure to let other folks know who are interested in these types of programs. At least in the US, it can save tens of thousands of dollars, so it's worth researching!

EDIT: To clarify, their accreditation is national, which will mean you won't be able to transfer credits to regionally accredited intuitions. This is not entirely unusual for online only college, but should be considered. So I will leave this as my parting word, if you are considering an online college that only has national accreditation, please consider this one instead of that one, as this one I will bet money is cheaper.

And here is estimated fees: According to the University of the People, they charge no tuition fees but students must pay some administrative fees to cover course assessments, ranging from $2,460 for an associate’s degree (two years) to $4,860 for a bachelor’s degree (four years). These include processing fees for applications and final exam assessments.

I have noticed that some users here don't have time to watch videos. I think on most of the video links I share here, there are always users commenting that it is better to read an article than watching this video. To be honest, I don't like all this complaining. It is kind of annoying.

So to make the users who dont have time to watch a video happy. Post a tldw summary. You dont have to write it yourself or anything. Just use chatgpt or something similar.

I have also noticed that there is better engagement and discussions when a tldw is posted.

Why YSK: Suppose, you want to copy multiple parts of texts from different documents to a single document. You can copy all of them and paste one by one by bringing up the clipboard history. This is one of the many useful cases of a clipboard history.

Here's how to do it:

Step 1: From the Windows Start menu, go to "Settings" and then "System". Go to the gear icon for "Settings" in the Windows Start menu and directly after that go to "System".

Step 2: Click "Clipboard" in the left sidebar and set the toggle at "Clipboard history" to "On".

This works in only Windows 10 and 11.

There was a peer-reviewed report published in the journal for Applied and Environmental Microbiology that studied the amount of bacteria that was blown from hand dryers in 36 public restrooms at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. The sample from the study concluded that as many as 60 colonies of bacteria were blown from a hand dryer in just 30-seconds. A number of those bacteria were linked to fecal and human bacteria, even bacteria known to cause serious infections.

Why YSK: If you've ever had cockroaches in your home, you would be familiar with the feeling of unease that comes when they escape your clutches while roaming freely within the crevices of your home and soiling your belongings along the way. Before that happens, you can use a flashlight to direct them to your 'striking zone.' I'm not sure of the specifics, but cockroaches are nocturnal, and when they see light, they interpret it as being exposed and vulnerable.

For example, if a roach is going left, shine the flashlight ahead of their path, and they'll go in the opposite direction. Afterward, use your weapon of choice to get rid of them.

Why YSK: There are a lot of people these days living alone with pets and if anything happened to the owner, others may not know to attend to the pet. If something happened to you, a coma, an accident, death, etc, your wallet would be the first place anyone would look for info about you and it would probably be the fastest way to bring attention to your small loved ones.

Why YSK: There is a recent update in Youtube that force user to turn on history to see videos in recommendation/home tab. You can get over it by turning the history version ON and then watch a video and make sure it's shown in the History tab. And now you can turn off the History and you will still see the recommendations/home feed loaded with videos. So the key is to not clear your watch history in Youtube if you already have one and then you can keep history turned ON/OFF as per you needed.

Hi everyone!

On the surface, this update brings a handful of features integrating the extension with other tools and services. We have the first of many features from the LemmyTools userscript, as well as the support for Alexandrite and Photon frontends. You can also directly search for communities through Lemmyverse.net and for posts through search-lemmy.com, among other small changes.

The biggest change was behind the scenes. I've completely refactored the code throughout the extension. Now that we have a clearer plan for the extension, I simplified all around, such as consolidating most functions to a central utils.js file. I also reworked the settings, and unfortunately this means you may have to add your home instance again. Moving forwards, it should be a lot easier to maintain the extension and for people to collaborate, which brings me to:

Why YSK: there are times when you need to not be stinky. A multi-day outing with friends staying in one house comes to mind. I'm having my comments I made the past few days receive zero engagements. It's not just me losing the early bird lottery too; my replies to a highly engaged comment has zero likes, while several comments immediately after me has double digits. It's nothing incendiary at all, just normal people's comments. But something just tripped the enigmatic AI and thenceforth I'm shadow banned.

Why you should know this?

Because YouTube is being a thought police between creators and their communities. It feels to me like 99.999% of creators on YouTube have no idea that this is happening, that honest to goodness people's engagements are never going to reach them on the platform; they're being silently silenced, by an AI that is figuratively a black box.

Look at this screenshot. If that's not damning evidence you tell me what is.

Why YSK: because what seems like equal situation from surface isn't always equal opportunity for all. And even when equal measure of help is provided, it might not be equally useful.

This is a very basic fact of life that everyone should learn in school:

If you are forced to accept the bare minimum that is put on the table, your capacity to say no quickly crashes down, to the point that you may be vulnerable to accept a very unfavorable deal.

A scenario where the vast majority of us might find this reality at some point through our lives is the labor market. Whether you are applying for a job, or requesting a raise or a promotion, you are only going to have leverage to get the company to offer you a better deal if you have better opportunities on the table. In socioeconomic contexts where wages are depressed, this is usually not the case. This means that, for a lot of people, accepting a very bad offer means the difference between living a miserable life with a roof over your head and becoming homeless, so they do virtually have no choice but to accept, which only becomes more apparent if they have family members who depend on them.

In this context, a labor union that decides to initiate a strike isn't just provoking trouble for the sake of it - it is leveling the playing field by creating a situation where not only the livelihoods of the workers are dependent on the negotiation, but the profits of the company and even its capacity to survive are as well, whereas the latter usually wouldn't be.

Note that this applies to many other aspects of life as well. People often stay in abusive relationships because they do not have the means (or think they do not have the means) to leave them. It is difficult to leave the household you share with an abusive partner if you do not have the economic means to move out, and some people may stay in disfunctional friend groups because they think they aren't capable of making new friends, but need some social contact nonetheless.

Different configurations of society may protect people from these pitfalls or incentivize falling into them. The idea that people should find the means to leave their parents' household as soon as they turn 18 deprives them of an economic mattress that would otherwise allow them to be more aggressive when they negotiate for their salary, or even open up the possibility to dedicate time into trying to create their own business or projects. Different forms of social security, such as unemployment benefits, minimum guaranteed income or basic universal rent make working people far less dependent on the possibility of being laid off, which would motivate them to confront management about negative working conditions.

Why YSK: It appears several Lemmy Instances are flagged as suspicious and at least 1 instance intentionally using the name of ransomware. A couple of the big enterprise monitoring suites (Fortiguard, ZScaler) will flag your account and may end up with you being pulled into an office for an explanation, or worse.

TL;DR: Keep browsing to your local instance at work for now.

Many well-known scientists throughout history have been socialists, communists, or anarchists. These scientists believed in forming a society where resources are more equitably distributed, often involving common ownership of the means of production. Here are some examples:

Why?

Even though green coffee beans tend to be heavier due to the higher water content, generally it's cheaper to roast your own compared to buying them pre-roasted.

You can roast the same beans at different levels to get some variety without having to go out and buy a new batch.

It's kind of fun and a decent conversation topic.

Notes

Don't be scared by how long this post is. It basically just comes down to spread beans on a cookie sheet, put in preheated oven, wait around 12-15 minutes and then take them out and cool them.

Since we're talking about roasting beans, naturally you're going to need a grinder to actually use them.

The process will create some smoke, even with a light roast. Basically, darker roast, more smoke. So far I've mainly done pretty light roasts and even though my kitchen doesn't have much ventilation (and my oven doesn't have fancy modern contraptions like, you know, a light or a fan) it hasn't been an issue.

Your oven should be reasonably clean if you don't want the roasted coffee to taste like random stuff.

If you're a super coffee snob and it has to be perfect, this may not be for you. It's pretty easy, but odds are the first few tries aren't going to be perfect especially if you like darker roasts.

You're going to want something like a large metal mixing bowl and colander for the cooling process. My colander is plastic, so you can probably get away with that if you don't put the red hot beans in it directly out of the oven.

You'll also probably need access to an outside area where bits of coffee chaff blowing around aren't going to bother people. I don't think there's really an easy way to deal with coffee chaff indoors.

By the way, don't try to grind green coffee beans in a normal grinder. They are insanely, and I mean insanely hard and tough. You'll destroy your grinder unless it is an absolute tank. (I'd say it's also not really worth trying, green coffee didn't taste very good to me.)

How

Here's the process:

1. Start preheating your oven to 500f/260c. (Some people say as hot as possible, some people use a slightly lower temperature like 460-475f.)
2. Get a cookie sheet ready. Just a standard cookie sheet. Mine aren't super clean so I put a layer of silver foil on it. Don't preheat the cookie sheet itself.
3. Measure out about 1 cup of green coffee beans. (I've found you can fit about 2 cups on a single sheet but it's probably better to start small.) You want to make sure the beans are spread out evenly in a single layer.
4. Look for beans that are discolored/damaged and toss them away. Don't be a perfectionist though, just get rid of 10-15 of the worst looking beans. Something like that.
5. Place the cookie sheet in the oven once it's reached the correct temperature. I put mine on the bottom rack near the (electric) heating element. If you're going for a darker roast, I guess this might make burning them more likely.
6. Set a timer for ~12 minutes. I wouldn't recommend roasting longer than 14 minutes your first time.
7. Now you wait a bit. Probably around the 8 minute mark, you're going to start hearing sharp cracking/popping sounds. Don't worry, the beans won't jump around like popcorn and the sound is fairly loud so you're not likely to miss it. At this point (or in 1-2 minutes) you can remove the beans and have a light roast. This point is known as the "first crack".
8. After a couple of minutes, the sounds will die off and you won't hear anything for a little bit. If you keep roasting, you'll start to hear a softer, more muted crackling sound start. This is the "second crack". I would not recommend roasting past this point until you're comfortable with the process and have an idea of how roasted the beans are at this point. If you roast much longer, it's very easy to burn them and there's also going to be a lot more smoke.
9. Remove the beans from the oven. You can let them rest for 1-2 minutes on the cookie sheet if you want, then transfer to something like a metal mixing bowl. It has to be something that can deal with 500f stuff touching its surface.
10. Ideally get another mixing bowl/colander/whatever as well. Pouring the beans back and forth through the air is a good way to cool them off and remove chaff. What's chaff you ask? The beans are coated with a papery layer of chaff. Don't worry though, once they're roasted it's really easy to remove. You want to try to cool off the beans pretty quickly at this point.
11. Go outside and blow gently on the roasted beans in your bowl. You should see a bunch of super light, papery chaff fly out. You can pour the hot beans from one bowl to another, and if there's a bit of a breeze that'll help a lot. Otherwise, you can just blow on them. You could also stir them around with a wooden spoon or something to encourage the chaff to separate.
12. Once the chaff is mostly gone (it's fine if there's a little left, or little pieces stuck to some beans) and the beans are fairly cool you can just leave them in a safe place for around 12 hours to fully cool and vent CO2. Don't put them in a sealed container for the first 12-ish hours.

Conclusion

One thing to note is you don't want to actually grind/use the beans for at least 12 hours. It might seem unintuitive, but from what I've read as freshly roasted as possible isn't necessarily best. Depending on the beans/roast level, the coffee might reach its optimal tastiness even a couple weeks after roasting.

I'm far from an expert, but feel free to ask questions in the comments if you want. I can recommend a grinder/beans to get started with if anyone needs information like that.

WHY YSK- Many people practice mindfulness and meditation as part of their lives, and some would like to but feel like they don't have time to sit down and meditate properly. Once you've gotten used to doing it as a part of your daily activities, it becomes easy to simply take a few breaths and gain some peace from your everyday existence. You don't need to wait for a time when you can sit and clear your mind completely. It's a nice bonus, but not necessary for living a mindful life.

I'm new, what is this?

Instance Assistant is a browser extension that started out as a way to quickly jump from one community to the version on your home instance, so that you could subscribe/participate immediately. Since then, a few other features have been implemented:

• Redirect to your home instance:
  • Buttons will be added to the sidebar of any Lemmy or Kbin community you visit, which will let you open the same community on your home instance.
• Open links in home instance:
  • Right click context menu will allow you to open any links in your home instance
• Improved Error Pages:
  • 'Community not found' pages now have better information, a button to trigger a fetch, a button to open a community in the source instance, and more.
• Customizable popup & sidebar menus:
  • Customizable list of instances to let you quickly switch home instances. This is great for if you have multiple accounts on different instances.

Why YSK: I have seeing been a lot of general posts on various communities where they don't belong. There is a perfect community for this.

Posts like:

"Feels like I am spending less time on social media after joining lemmy" on ShowerThoughts community. This is a not a shower thought. This is more of a general thought which belongs in [email protected]

"This is not a shitpost but I am loving lemmy" on lemmyshitpost community. This is not even a thought sharing community yet it has been posted and been upvoted to frontpage. This belongs in [email protected] too.

I hope the moderators of all communities tighten up a bit and help posts go where they belong.

Why YSK

One Of Lemmy's creators mentioned it as part of the inspiration for the name, so it's a nice dive to play the game.

In a 2020 post, Lemmy's co-creator Dessalines wrote about the origin of the name Lemmy. "It was nameless for a long time, but I wanted to keep with the fediverse tradition of naming projects after animals. I was playing that old-school game Lemmings, and Lemmy (from Motorhead) had passed away that week, and we held a few polls for names, and I went with that."

One of the biggest overlooks when it comes to cooking dinners or any involved meal with multiple ingredients is accounting for the calories each ingredient will take. Let's say you're cooking pasta and you want to include the sauce, some seasonings, some things to mix with the pasta .etc

You're done but you won't know what each bowl of that finished pasta will be like per serving. That's why you have to take into account, all of the calories of the ingredients. That tablespoon of vegetable oil you use, that's 100 calories. The sauce you're gonna use, that's probably another 100. The pasta, 140 probably. It doesn't work as if the calories are going to vanish by the time you're finished cooking said meal. Each bowl you could have, could amount to over 500 at most, but you may not know it and it's easy to overlook.

That's why also, it looks like people pack on weight so easily when they're down to just dinner meals to eat. They pile up fast.

YSK: When making posts on Lemmy/Kbin always put at the end some hashtags related to your post topic.

So users from Mastodon and Pixelfed can interact with your post without even need to use their Lemmy/Kbin account or learn about "how to use the ActivityPub".
This also helps to have more content avaliable across the Fediverse due to better discoverability.
