Hey guys, the new instance feddit.org is online, actually still in the test phase, but everything is running smoothly, while we at feddit.de do not know how things will continue because the admin is not available and the website is down. The future of feddit.de is uncertain. Feddit.org is managed democratically by the non-profit organization fediverse.foundation in Vienna, where the servers are also located. The administration consists of 3 feddit.de people and one from the foundation. You can decide for yourself whether you want to move the community to feddit.org or stay here, but the option is there. Wann move?

Constant disk activity (discuss.tchncs.de)
submitted 2 months ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

I am constantly hearing disc activity on my ds218+. In the Activity manager I can see constant read/write on the performance overview. In the task list I can't see anything showing read/write, other than Swap, but that shows up less frequently than i hear the clicking. The RAM usage on the system is also under 50%.

Can anyone help? I am driving myself insane, trying to find the cause. I disabled the usage history in the performance monitor and all docker containers are paused.

I have a RAID 6 volume with data protection on my DS1621+. A video file seems to have become corrupt - it worked in Plex a few months ago but now it won’t play at all. I’ve tried in VLC, the built-in DSM video player - nothing seems to work. No other files appear to be corrupt, all drives show as Healthy.

Is it possible to repair the file, and if so how would I do that? My research seems to only find results where an entire volume is corrupt. In this case I’d like to just recover a single file.

I‘m planning to migrate from a DS224+ with 2x14TB in Raid 1 and with volume encryption to a DS423+ with 2x18TB in SHR and no encryption.

The 2x14TB will be added later on to the DS423+. That’s why I want to use SHR to effectively use the mixed HDD sizes.

Since I would like to keep everything the same as it was on the DS224+, what would be the best approach to migrate to the new NAS? Can the synology migration assistant be used for this task, or are the difference in Raid (R1 to SHR) or the unwanted volume encryption going to be a problem?

Or is there a better and more effective way to deal with this?

I.e. like inserting all disks into the new NAS, creating a new SHR volume2 with the two empty 18TB and then move each shared folder individually to the new volume. Afterwards deleting the original volume1, format the disks and add them to the new volume2? I will add a NVMe to one of the slots as a storage pool anyways which could be the new volume1 (if that matters at all) for docker containers.

Any help and experience will be appreciated!

I have set up the reverse proxy at the login portal. I love it, but if I use a url to a non existant service, the proxy sends my to the dsm login page. I dont want this. Is there a way of configuring so that any address not in the list of valid adresses is sent to a 404 page?

Based on the analysis of the community submissions to the Synology RAM Compatibility List, here are some key insights from the previous year:

General Overview

  • Total Responses: 268
  • Unique NAS Models: 40
  • Unique Memory Brands: 37
  • Unique Vendor Countries: 46

Memory Brands Tested

A total of 37 different memory brands have been tested, including Kingston, Crucial, NEMIX, Timetec, and Samsung.

Vendor Countries

The dataset includes responses from 46 different countries, with the UK, France, Germany, USA, Canada, and others being prominent.

Success Rate of Memory Tests

  • 85.4% of the memory tests reported successful outcomes (marked as "Yes").
  • 14.6% of the tests reported unsuccessful outcomes (marked as "No").

Success Rate Analysis By Brand

Based on the analysis of memory brand performance in Synology NAS systems, considering brands with at least 5 entries, here are the insights:

Top Working Brands

  • Micron: 100% success rate (9 tested, 9 worked)
  • SK Hynix: 100% success rate (7 tested, 7 worked)
  • Nemix: 93.33% success rate (15 tested, 14 worked)
  • Timetec: 90.00% success rate (20 tested, 18 worked)
  • Samsung: 88.46% success rate (26 tested, 23 worked)

Brands with Lower Success Rates

  • Corsair: 60.00% success rate (5 tested, 3 worked)
  • Crucial: 82.35% success rate (85 tested, 70 worked)
  • V-Color: 83.33% success rate (6 tested, 5 worked)
  • Kingston: 83.87% success rate (62 tested, 52 worked)

It's important to note that while brands like Micron and SK Hynix show a 100% success rate, the number of tests conducted is relatively low compared to brands like Crucial and Kingston, which have a larger number of tests. Therefore, the high success rates for Micron and SK Hynix could be influenced by the smaller sample size.

Most Common Memory Sizes Tested

The most common memory module size tested is 16 GB, followed by 8 GB, 32 GB, and 4 GB.

ECC vs Non-ECC Memory

  • 145 instances of Non-ECC memory were reported. (54.1%)
  • 77 instances of ECC (error-correcting) memory were reported. (28.73%)
  • 26 responses were unsure if the memory was ECC or not.

Top NAS Models Tested

The most frequently tested Synology NAS models are DS923+, DS920+, DS224+, DS220+, and DS423+.

I ended up getting the Timetec 16GB module from Amazon (clean link: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07H4XNNXK).

Couldn't have been easier. I turned the NAS off, removed the drives (for easier access to the memory slot), dusted the inside of the case (absolutely needed in my home), slotted the module in, and turned the NAS back on.

Recently learned about the SynoCommunity packages, but I saw this comment for a package that HyperBackup might not recognize a package and thus not back it up. However, it was unclear if it was for the particular package, or if this is a shortcoming of the SynoCommunity packages—since it's a third-party thing, maybe it applies to all SynoCommunity packages.

Does anyone know if installing a package via SynoCommunity can be backed up through HyperBackup (or another way)? Thanks.

I'm writing this post because I've gone through all the usual troubleshooting tips and I'm at an dead end.

I was cleaning up my DS216j and checked if there were any new updates and stumbled by accident that the NAS didn't auto update to the newest version as per the release notes for that model. It was stuck on 7.1.1-42962 Update 6 so I manually updated it to 7.2.1-69057 Update 1 as suggested by the notes and here the issue began.

I knew something was off as soon as I saw the app images corrupted

Going to the package center it can't connect to it and is throwing the following error:

Connection failed. Please check your network and time settings, or refer to this article for further information.

For pretty much any app it throws the following description:

DSM update can't do a version check and is failing as seen below

Synology service status page says everything's up. The device itself has access to the internet (NTP syncs time, Configuration backup is working) and I can curl webs sites from synology normally via SSH so I'm a bit puzzled.

EDIT: Upon digging a bit further on the Synology forums it appears I'm not the only one affected as there are other reports for pretty much the same thing

I have a DS220+ with 2x 6TB drives in RAID. I used some bad RAM, and now the volume is read-only and won't restore. I was resigned to backup the data, create a new volume, and restore the data, but I had an idea -- will this work?: Basically, I use one of the two drives as its own backup. I pull out one drive and save it, I wipe the other drive and create a new volume, then pop in the drive with files from the old volume, and copy the files over, and then recreate the RAID. Should that work? Any obstacles I should watch for?

Photos added a new directory "PhotoLibrary" and moved my "Moments" folder into the "Photos" directory in my Home folder.

Photos works great and all my photos/videos are there, but the folder structure is a bit of a mess now.

If I were to move things from the Moments folder to the PhotoLibrary, does it break albums, subject detection, shared photos, face ID, etc., or does it neatly link things up?

UPDATE: I can now confirm that moving stuff doesn't break anything. 👌

Hi all,

I recent times my ds918 is marking a hdd as critical because it went to a full identification cycle. It only failed once and smart attributes, including the long ones, are always showing a healthy hdd.

The point is that synology is re issuing the alert every day and I cannot manually mark it as no problematic.

So, how seriously should I take this warning and if there is any way to reset this status once for all????

Regards

So I was happily using an SSD nvme as volume storage for all of my docker containers and almost forgot that it was officially unsupported after so long with that setup.

Today though, I updated DSM and it's not showing the SSD drive as unsupported, and prompted me to do an online repair, which failed. (Yes, I know, I should have read the change log in more detail).

No Biggie, everythings backed up. But is there a way to force it to work? Or should I try rolling back the update? It was nice having all of the docker stuff on the SSD. And I have zero use for caching, so will end up with a useless nvme on my hands if it's not going to work, which is kind of annoying.

I think it's getting time to start research to replace my aging Synology, what's good in the marketplace right now?

I've a DS 1513+ which has served us well but given the age of the disks I'm thinking build a replacement and mirror it, then archive the old HDDs as a backup.

We also have a Terramaster unit that's pure junk, but that's used for non-critical archival data. Only Unraid saves it from the recycler.

DS1522+ or is the 16- or 18-series worth the extra? Or is there something better for the money? The old 15-series has been rock solid, are the modern units as good?

I waited years for this feature to be included in Photos. While the DSM 7.x update and migration to Photos went very smoothly, when I look at the subject album in Photos, it's showing a very small list vs what I know it's detected.

For example, the album does not have a subject for "bird", yet I can search for "bird" and it will show me birds.

Is there any way to see a list of what subjects it can detect, or a way to force showing ALL of the detected subjects in this subjects album?

Hi everyone! I have a unique issue and wondering if the community can give me some input.

I have 8 family members that I'm supporting with their photo and file management, spanning across multiple countries.

My current setup: Server 1: Serving 4 users Location: Taiwan Backup Server1: Taiwan(different location) C2 backup with Backblaze

Server2: Serving 4 users Location: Seattle Backup Server2: Seattle(same location) C2 backup with Backblaze

They are all on the same network(Tailscale), but 2 separate systems. But this is the only way I can get low latency for the local users.

My question to this community is if there is a way to run a single cluster and have whatever server is the closest to them at the time. So I only need to maintain 1 single server network?

Basically I'm running 4 Synology boxes. I want to minimize things a bit.

Thank you!

When setting up a DS923+, I added a reservation for IP address to my router. So I was wondering if there is a way to get DSM to pick up the new (and henceforth static) IP address quicker than waiting for the current one to expire (which would take about 22 more hours). On Windows/Mac there's an option to renew/refresh DHCP in network settings. Is there an equivalent thing I can do on the NAS? If not, I guess I can just wait around for it to get refreshed.

With Surveillance Station, you can set up push notifications to send an email, text, or notification on mobile via DS Cam app.

I get the email service - you're authenticating yourself as the email account holder and sending an email. Do images transmit to Synology controlled servers before getting to your email inbox?

With push notifications to DS Cam, the same question. Are any images transmitted to any other servers before arriving on my phone?

These may be straightforward - but I was burned on the Eufy scandal and don't want a similar situation here.

Just got delivery of the DS923+ so now figuring out the drives and other add-ons to order. I was curious if I could first put in an SSD like a Crucial MX500 and start up the NAS, and finish installation of DSM. And once that's done, add the rest of the drives (had 3x Seagate Ironwolf Pro 18TB in mind) as a separate volume. Would this work? (more importantly, would this help?) Would love any other suggestions for things I can add to the NAS.

SSDs for DS620Slim (lemmy.world)

I’ve got 6 1TB crucial BX500 SSDs. When installing it says they are unsupported but I just continued on anyway. I’m assuming everything should run fine anyway, and just want to make sure. Will there be any unforeseen consequences?
