Back in school and through my first year of uni, I had a habit of putting things off.

Studying or diving into projects was always a last-minute rush, fueled solely by impending deadlines. I convinced myself that I thrived under pressure, but truthfully, I only worked when the pressure mounted.

Procrastination slowly chipped away at my potential. I felt constant guilt, my confidence plummeted, and it left me utterly miserable.

But I refused to live that way any longer. I knew change was necessary. I delved deep into the reasons behind procrastination, delving into the psychological and scientific roots.

Then, armed with this knowledge, I experimented with various strategies.

Guess what? I've largely conquered that habit, and it's transformed my life.

And now, I want to share these life-changing strategies:

Understand why you procrastinate:

Procrastination isn't just about poor time management or sheer laziness. It's about emotions—linking negative feelings like fear or overwhelm to tasks, leading us to avoid them. Our brains are wired this way, but it's a hurdle in the modern world.

Name and Acknowledge Feelings:

When the urge to procrastinate strikes, find out why. Sometimes, simply identifying that fear or emotion can diminish its overwhelming nature.

Small Steps:

Break daunting tasks into manageable segments. It's easier to commence when the steps are clear. Instead of attempting an entire paper, start with the first 200 words.

Craft a Clear Plan:

Map out precise plans for when and where tasks will be tackled. Saying, "I will do (this task) at (this location) by (this time)" significantly enhances follow-through, backed by research.

Visualize Failure:

Odd as it may sound, imagining the disappointment of failing your goal can spur action, even on off days. Our aversion to failure is a potent motivator.

Remember, overcoming procrastination is a gradual process.

These strategies aren't quick fixes, but with dedication, they yield results.

P.S. Join this free newsletter to uncover more productivity secrets and conquer procrastination once and for all.

I’m 23 and completely lost and stuck!

I 23F graduated highschool (might I add barely) in 2018. Had dreams of doing music that I took a whole year off to do. This was ultimately ruined by parents high doubt which ultimately gave me very low confidence. I entered community college had NO idea what to do and never even went to a counselor abt my situation was only taking one or two classes random ones. Then when I actually started being full time I began to fail heavily. Then Covid hit 2020 and all the classes went crazy and were pretty much cancelled. I ended up getting Covid pretty bad beginning of a semester in 2022 so it was a bad start. I ended up trying to sign up fall semester and got notified I was let go from the college. I felt like an absolute failure how could I flunk out of community college. I’m currently in another community college but I just don’t know what I want to do. I feel nothing interest me. My parents are constantly very hard on me which is completely understandable but I just feel so alone and stuck. I barely have a social life I just have nothing to my name. Absolutely nothing and I don’t know how to get out of this “funk”. I want more than anything to succeed but I’ve failed so much I’m scared to do anything now. Any advice? Anyone ever in a similar Situation? I’m thinking of trying a trade school also just extra detail. Thanks to anyone who will take the time to read and respond.

A reminder from Life to you:

Stay the course! You´re not lost.

Yo-ho-ho, Shipmate! Captain Life here.

You are on course towards everything you desire.

Every wave and gust nudges you

towards the horizon you're meant to explore.

There's a current beneath you, quietly and persistently streamlining your course,

You're not lost or stuck at sea; you're sailing smoothly towards the harbour you're destined to reach. Stay the course

P.S. What did the sea monster eat for lunch? Fish and ships!

Motivation can sometimes be elusive, especially when faced with challenges or routine tasks. Stoicism offers a unique perspective on finding and sustaining motivation. As Epictetus, a Greek Stoic philosopher, said, “First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.” This reflects the Stoic emphasis on aligning actions with values and goals.

Here are some Stoic-inspired strategies to help boost your motivation:

  1. Clarify Your Values and Goals: Understand what truly matters to you. What are your core values? What goals align with these values? When your actions are in harmony with your values, motivation often follows more naturally.
  2. Set Clear, Achievable Objectives: Break down your goals into smaller, manageable tasks. This makes them less daunting and provides a clear path forward. Completing these tasks can give you a sense of accomplishment and fuel further motivation.
  3. Focus on the Process, Not Just the Outcome: Stoicism teaches us to focus on our efforts rather than the results, which are often beyond our control. Find joy and satisfaction in the doing, not just in the achievement.
  4. Reflect on the Benefits of Action: Consider the positive outcomes of taking action. How will achieving your goal improve your life or the lives of others? This can provide a strong incentive to move forward.
  5. Practice Gratitude: Regularly remind yourself of what you’re thankful for. This can shift your focus from what you lack to what you already have, providing a foundation of contentment to build upon.
  6. Visualize Success: Imagine the fulfillment and satisfaction of achieving your goals. This visualization can be a powerful motivator.
  7. Stay Present: Avoid getting overwhelmed by the future or regrets about the past. Focus on what you can do right now. As Marcus Aurelius said, “Concentrate every minute like a Roman – like a man – on doing what’s in front of you with precise and genuine seriousness, tenderly, willingly, with justice. And on freeing yourself from all other distractions.”
  8. Seek Inspiration: Read, listen to, or watch something that inspires you. This could be related to your goals or simply something that lifts your spirits and energy levels.
  9. Exercise and Stay Active: Physical activity can boost your mood and energy levels, making it easier to find the motivation for other tasks.

Remember, motivation is not always about waiting for the right moment or feeling; it’s also about discipline and consistency. Even on days when you’re not feeling motivated, sticking to your routine and commitments can help you maintain progress and can eventually reignite your motivation.

Hello, everyone! I recently stumbled upon an intriguing concept: using 'potions' for self-care and restoration, much like characters in our favorite games and stories. This isn't about literal potions, but rather activities or practices that rejuvenate us mentally, physically, and spiritually. Here are some thoughts to kick off our discussion:

  1. Health Potions: These might be activities that benefit your physical well-being, like exercise or healthy eating. What are your go-to practices for physical rejuvenation?
  2. Mana Potions: These are activities that recharge your mental energy. Perhaps reading, puzzles, or meditation. What mental 'potions' do you rely on?
  3. Spirit Potions: Actions that uplift your spirit, like spending time with loved ones or engaging in creative pursuits. How do you lift your spirits when you're feeling down?

Incorporating these 'potions' into our routines can help prevent burnout, maintain health, and keep a positive outlook. But really, how do you balance these restorative practices with the demands of daily life? What works for you, and what challenges do you face in keeping up with your self-care 'potions'? Let's share tips, experiences, and perhaps even 'recipes' for our favorite potions!

From early 2023 until about August or September I (23M) would go through phases of extreme motivation/confidence, and phases of extreme depression. Throughout even the depression/low motivation phases I would still get shit done and go to the gym everyday.

But now After August or September I haven't been able to get back to the good phases again and I can probably count on one hand how many days I had the "I'm him" mentality since then. Worst part is, I can't even bring myself to get things done or go to the gym anymore. I've also seemingly completely given up on dating even though throughout the year until July or August I would at least semi-regularly go on dates with women but now because of the lack of confidence and motivation I just can't be bothered to talk to anyone, message anyone, or even open a dating app.

This bad mindset I can't seem to get out of also changed my social media life because I can't be bothered to post anything on my Instagram story. Before, I would at least once or twice a week post something what I'm doing, my dogs, or just myself, but now can't because of the lack of confidence. I liked posting occasionally on my story because for me it was a good way for people to contact me and it was pretty common for people to reply to them and talk or go out with someone.

Any tips on how to break this downward spiral? It's legit gotten so bad and I need to pull out of this.

I love making lists and setting goals. However, today I couldn’t add a recruiter to LinkedIn (I’m job hunting) and discovered that I company I applied to has horrible employee reviews, and those two things made job hunting feel even more impossible. Plus we are back to work today and I was not jazzed about that.

It derailed my productivity for HOURS. Didn’t go to the gym, didn’t work on other stuff on my list. How do I keep hopelessness from ruining my productivity?

I’m not kidding, make use of your longing to live. Everyday before going to sleep, look back at your day and think “If this was my last day, then what I did today, was it worthwhile?” I heard about this technique while listening to Sadhguru some time back and it’s amazing how I’ve stopped wasting my time scrolling on Instagram or any other way. I have started living, improving myself everyday, trying to live my best life before I die!

Read to start your new year strong

You think that the possibility of you changing for the better is like winning the lottery — you have a better chance of getting struck by lightning before it happens.

Everyday is the same thing. Scroll till your brain is fogged. Smoke till your brain is fried. Beat off till you’re numb. Then you think “I can’t change no matter how much I try.” Sounds familiar?

I won’t sit here and pretend I know the source of your issues but I will tell you one thing. This year went by fast, and next year is gonna go by even faster. And everyday, you go back and forth between fixating on the finish line, and losing sight of it. Between being fixated on your worry-free future but also losing sight of what your future can hold for you. And before you can finish a blink, the inevitability of time creeps up on you in the form of crippling regret and sadness.

“I should’ve” “If only I” “No matter what I do, I can’t stop”

A lot of you believe you can’t get disciplined but forget one simple thing. Some were blessed with discipline, but most had to build it. You are not an exception. You have to be delusional enough to believe you can change.

Delusional? Yes, delusional. If change to you is as likely as getting struck by lightning, then let change be the lightning that strikes twice. Be so delusional that change in your mind is more impossible than changes in reality. Be so delusional to the point where you believe you will defy the odds time and time again. Chance is a construct and lucky is an idea, but your choices are a defining factor that will determine the quality of your life.

The only thing I’m asking you to be in 2024, 2025, or whatever year you read this, is delusional. Make the idea of change in your mind more impossible than it actually is so you can realize that your new self is more attainable than you think. Two days ago, I made a post here asking for advice. Taking that advice to heart, I came to an epiphany. Now, I sit here, wild enough to believe that I can speak these words to power, and influence a good amount of your to change your lives through an unwavering belief in yourselves. Who am I to sit here and believe that my words can change you? A delusional mf.

Be so delusional that you actually believe that you can wake up at 6am. Be so delusional that you believe that you can cut off social media for a week, start that business idea, lose 30lbs, or change your life.

It starts off small. “There’s no way on this earth I can bring myself to drink 2 water bottles.” Then it’s “No way in hell I make my bed before the day is over.” Then you graduate to “Absolutely no shot that I quit tik tok for 6 hours” Being this delusional about the small things builds this scar tissue you get from fighting the war within yourself.

The funny thing about delusion is, once you start to contradict these delusions by your actions, you start to believe that “impossible” doesn’t apply to you. Your dreams start to get bigger and your delusion is a source of motivation since you’ve proved yourself wrong before and you can do it again.

So when you make those resolutions today, make sure you have the audacity to write “be delusional”. Love.

I have adhd and have been battling depression for a couple years. I want to start treating the adhd with actions and mindset shifts and I'm having a hard time navigating first steps. I usually go to therapy but am not currently able to at the moment. I know what lifestyle changes need to happen, but I find myself so inhibited to actually make moves. I don't understand it. I'm not looking to start any meds.

Can anyone help with some starter steps/advice? I don't know where or how to start.
