This community is a place to discuss books in Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere--the shared universe where most of his novels take place. Please take a moment to review our rules!

1. Show respect to others

Every interaction in the community must be kind, respectful, and welcoming. No person should ever feel threatened, harassed, or unwelcome. Do not engage in hate speech, harassment, insults, personal attacks, trolling, or arguing in bad faith. Interpretation of this rule is subject to the moderators' discretion. Please remember the human.

2. Spoilers not permitted in post titles

Post titles must never reveal spoilers. This includes no direct quotes from the books. Title wording should be vague if necessary. Grey areas are up to the moderators' discretion.

3. Use spoiler markup for all spoiler posts

Please cover all posts in a spoiler tag. Spoilers outside the scope of a post must be hidden with spoiler markup and the scope indicated. The scope is determined by the post tag flair along with any additional restrictions placed by the OP.

You spoiler tag like this:

::: Spoiler Spoiler Tag

message here

:::

in order to get:

Book Name HereStuff about the book in here

4. Post must be tagged for spoilers

All posts must be tagged to indicate the level of expected spoilers in the link/post and comments. The spoiler scope should include the name of the book or books, such as [Book Name] or [Book Series]. You may also say [No Spoilers] if you don't want any spoilers at all. Be as specific as possible. You can even say [Book Name Ch 34], for example.

5. No excessive reposting

Identical content may not be reposted within, by default, a two week period. This period may be adjusted at the moderators' discretion.

6. Posts must be on topic

Posts must be related to the Cosmere. Posts relating to sensitive topics (such as politics, religions, etc.) will be subject to greater scrutiny.. Meta discussions related to the community are generally permitted. Self promotion for money is disallowed. Art, podcasts, videos and other such actual content is allowed.

7. Respect intellectual property

Piracy and copyright infringement are strictly forbidden. With some exceptions, all content must comply with Dragonsteel's licensing and fanart policies. Artwork must be attributed and may not be posted against the artist's wishes. Fan art should be marked as [OC] or credited to the original artist. If AI was used as a tool, please also mark the post [AI: Tool Used], for example [AI: Midjourney].

8. Leaked content is not permitted

Content which is released outside of Brandon Sanderson's wishes is not allowed under any circumstances. Pre-release content publicly released by Brandon, Dragonsteel Entertainment, or a publisher is okay if marked appropriately for spoilers.

9. Posts must be thoughtful and unique (Except Fri-Sun, PST)

Posts must provide original thoughts, questions, ideas, news, or interpretations of the books that can be discussed by the community.

Restricted content often includes: memes; images reminiscent of something in the books; AI-generated artwork; photos of books, bookshelves, merchandise; casting posts; photos of pets; etc. This content is not restricted in /c/brandonsanderson if you’d like to post there.

Welcome to /c/cosmere! (sffa.community)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Please note: Lemmy is still alpha technology and is under current development

Welcome to Lemmy!

We have two communities for Sanderson on Lemmy: /c/cosmere and /c/brandonsanderson. /c/cosmere will be for cosmere books discussion, /c/brandonsanderson will be for more general purpose Sanderson discussion. You can also check out related science fiction/fantasy communities in partnership with SFFA (science fiction fantasy alliance) by clicking the Communities button in the top left.

Lemmy mostly works like reddit. Here are a few key differences to be aware of.

Spoiler tagging in posts/comments

Spoiler markup on Lemmy works like this:

::: spoiler Book Name/Spoiler Scope

text here

:::

That becomes the following, with the spoiled text collapsed, and the book name displayed to warn people what it’s a spoiler for.

Book Name/Spoiler Scopetext here

This is important to note because all spoilery posts and comments must be under spoiler formatting until we have spoiler toggle ability to blur posts.

Making an account

You can browse the communities without an account, however, if you want to post/comment, you will have to create your account, then verify the email of that account, before you can log into it. Please be aware that the verification email often goes to the spam/junk folder so you may need to check there for it. Please also be aware that the site does not notify you that it has sent the email and that you may see an endlessly spinning loading icon — in that case, you should assume the mail was sent and check for it. This email verification issue has been addressed by our dev team and hopefully it resolves within the next 48 hours (it is currently July 4, Xpm PST). We are monitoring this issue closely.

Tagging posts

Our devs are still working on post flairs, so for now we ask that all posters include a tag in their post title indicating the spoiler scope. It’s as simple as adding [Book Name] to the beginning of your post title. For example:

[Mistborn: TFE] So how about that one fight [Oathbringer] What do you think about that Sanderlanche? [Warbreaker Ch 4] Can someone help me understand___? [No Spoilers] Latest progress update

Removed Posts

Currently, when a post is removed, it will no longer show up in your profile. We will copy the link to the post and send it to you with a message of what needs to be edited/changed. If the issue is something you can correct, make the change and then respond to our message and include your post link, and we can restore it.

Note that, unlike Reddit, post titles and links can be edited after posting!

Removed Comments

Currently, when a comment is removed, Lemmy will delete its contents (rather than simply marking the comment not displayable). As a result, when we remove comments for spoilers, we will copy the content of the comment into our message to you, along with a link to the comment. You can follow the link, make any necessary changes (note your changes will not display after you save), and then message us back (with a link to the comment) and we will restore it.

Mobile Apps

There are a number of third-party mobile apps available for Lemmy, including Jerboa (Android) (Currently not compatible with our instance due to version changes), Liftoff (iOS & Android), Connect (Android), Memmy (iOS) and more.

Please be aware that spoiler formatting DOES NOT WORK on mobile apps at this time. Mobile apps are all in alpha and beta stages and currently do not support the spoiler markdown. Use mobile apps at your own risk. The mobile website is functional and we recommend using that if spoilers are a concern.

If you have any questions or concerns feel free to comment below or post for help over at SFFA Meta.

A bit of a late post, so most of you have probably seen this already.

It looks like the cheapest virtual only buy in for the full game is $150, while the cheapest physical full game is $195 (+shipping/import tax!)

There are some links in there for some early reviews and play-throughs too. These only look to be the Stormlight system though, so I assume the Mistborn/Scadrial (an any other planets) are still in the works.

If anyone wants to join in drawing the cosmere logo on the canvas :) I already completed most of it but maybe you have some other ideas. The Logo is at 930, 200. You can use the build in template

So, finished RoW, I did not read the halfs (yet?) Edgedencer & Dawnshard - instead I cheated a bit and looked up the summary for these (Dawnshard mainly) as I was too hungry for more "spice" of the SA story so I wanted to continue with next SA book straight away. I did read all of the current Mistborn series we have before SA though about a year or something ago

So I do have some notion about the...shards, investiture and stuff but... I am still confused how the Cosmere magic works in general - I know that magic (Investiture) is different for each planet/system of the Cosmere and guessing it has something to do with the specific shards of that system... ?
⠀⠀

Well, if anyone wants to chime in with pointers I would be very thankful!
Meanwhile I will be scouring the wiki and WoBs to get a better picture.

light dragonsteel prime spoiler

does anyone else ship bat'chor and topaz? that's really all i wanted to ask :3

i think the two have a cute dynamic. i really like that idea of a merchant, escaping their responsibility, to go on adventures with an excentric jesk they secretely love. following them on an unknown quest, out of loyalty and love..

i dont really think it's there in the text, but i like to imagine it anyway

Canticle is a dragon or other powerful being's egg. The entire planet is an evenly rotating massive investiture sink. I can easily seeing that being a major part of the development of a dragon, both heating and sustaining the embryo. The hostility of the planet is also likely in part a defense mechanism.

the way that radiant healing and the surge of progression (regrowth) works, is by making someones body the way they see themselves. even old wounds can be healed this way, as long as the person doesnt yet accept their current body. this is demonstraded by lopen healing their arm.

so what would happen if a trans person (or generally any person with body dysmorthia) who doesnt accept their current body were healed this way? in my unchangable opionion, their body should transform to how they see themselves, physically transitioning them! i imagine a closeted, radiant trans person sucking in storm light for the first time and suddenly changing their appearance, to the surprise of everyone

I’ll go first: Mistborn Era 2

I wanted to ask everything in one post instead of multiple, so I divide this one.

Shards and Vessels

It's known that a Shard's Intent eventually overpowers the agency of the vessel. It's mentioned in the Stormlight epigraphs that Ati, the vessel of Ruin, was once a kind man.

I've been wondering about this process. Does the amount of time it takes for the vessel to lose agency depend on the shard and the vessel? For example:

  • If the new vessel is already a sliver of the same shard, will they lose agency faster?
  • If the new vessel is already a sliver of a shard with opposing intent, will they lose agency slower?
  • If a vessel (as in the case of Sazed) holds two shards with opposing intents, are they able to maintain their personality forever, the different intents "cancelling out"?
  • Do shards that seek change (Ruin, Endowment, Cultivation) in the most general way influence their vessel faster than the more passive intents (Preservation, Honor) who want to maintain?

Do the 16 shards divide neatly into eight pairs of opposing shards? I think we've only seen Ruin and Preservation as complete opposites, though it could be argued that Devotion/Dominion also works.

If a person held all the shards (assuming the Splintered ones are somehow fixed, and that no one managed to stop them in the process), what would happen? How about holding all the dawnshards as well? Would any mortal being be able to handle such a great amount of investiture?

What level of control, if any, does a shard have over their associated magic system? Could Sazed decide to "turn off" allomancy for the day?

Related somewhat, what shards is surgebinding associated with? It looks like it can be performed with any one of Stormlight, Voidlight and Lifelight. Does surgebinding with one of these constitute a separate magic system? If so, what actually are the Surges? If not, what's common to Honor, Cultivation, and Odium?

The Metallic Arts

In Allomancy, the metal that is burned is not the actual source of the power (investiture), but rather a key which determines which kind of investiture is drawn from Preservation.

The Lost MetalWe've seen in era 2 that Allomancers can also draw upon alternative sources of investiture, such as the Dor and whatever Autonomy's portal is made out of.

This is all fine for Mistings, but how can Mistborn (or Hemalurgists) decide which ability they want, if they have no metals?

In Allomancy, even non-Allomancers can burn the God Metals, whereas in Feruchemy, unkeyed nicrosil seems to be the only kind of metalmind that non-Feruchemists can access. Why is this?

And, when saying that anyone can burn God Metals, what does "anyone" mean? Is it any living creature who can digest them? Or do they have to be Scadrians, having some of Preservation's own investiture in themselves?
Ditto for Feruchemical nicrosil.

Can a Rosharan human (the species existed before the Shattering) burn lerasium or drain nicrosil?

Why

The Lost Metaldid Harmony make Wax and Wayne burn some lerasium instead of making them Mistborn directly, as with Spook
?

And lastly, is the cosmere-wide story arc just Autonomy and Odium being jerks to everyone?

I just finished the first mistborn series and loved it! I didn’t know about the Cosmere before I started but now that I know, what should I read next? I’m leaning toward the next mistborn trilogy.

13

Let's assume a Feruchemist has access to some other form of Investiture, maybe with a Perpendicularity, liquid Dor, becoming a Radiant, getting Breaths, or maybe even tapping Connection to become Elantrian or something. We've seen from TLM that Allomancers can use Investiture from a Perpendicularity instead of metals, so can Feruchemists do the same? If so, how would something like a coppermind work, where the attribute has data stored rather than just an amount? There's probably a WoB explaining this somewhere, but I can't find it.

Its been a while since I read RoW so I may be wrong on some of this, but this thought came up when reading another post.

RoW - All & Mistborn Secret History

  1. Do we know what happens when a godmetal is taken into the cognitive realm?
  2. We know that lower spren have a presence in both the physical and cognitive realm - do bonded spren have a visible presence in the cognitive realm when they are in the physical? In M:SH people show up as lights in the cognitive realm.
  3. if you can take one of those god metal (or inverted god metal) assassin blades into the cognitive realm, could you kill A) spren B) people using them?
