Doesn't like Firefox mobile apparently. For a privacy focused platform you'd think it would support that over Chrome.

Absolutely I think this is the end goal. They've accidentally discovered something that might actually give them value to investors (training AI) and they want to lock down that value so they can finally IPO, get rich and live happily ever after.

If the instance you're on defederates from other instances you like the content on (eg. Like Beehaw recent did) you can still access it just fine by switching sites/accounts.
If it's truly only 3% then that's all the more reason why deals could have been done with those app developers instead of dropping the bomb they did. It could have helped their bottom line while keeping their power users on side if they actually put some effort into communication with them.
Sadly that would mean they're looking at it as "only 3%" and just not giving a damn.
The VC money is drying up and they're demanding a return on investment as the world's economy struggles on at the moment.
Unfortunately you're not the first sub this is happening to and surely won't be the last. We're about to possibly see a large shift in who moderates the subs at Reddit and it will only be for the worst.
Comes up as free only with Kindle Unlimited for me.
