So my spouse is desi, and in south asia they've got loads of different kinds of rice. The most popular, everyday rice, is basmati - once I got a taste of it I was hooked. Other rices are used for specific purposes, like rice pudding, but basmati is the default. In the US (and most of Asia far as I can tell) the default rice is jasmine, the conflict here was between my parents and my wife, combining both rices is a mortal sin.

It was actually a bit surprising when we moved to China that there was only really one kind of rice ever used - buying basmati was just as much a specialty item here as it was in the states.

I never had a good male role model growing up, so instead of being an asshole like my dad or anyone from church I just transitioned

lmao I like this.

Honestly I feel like people should have a better understanding of how their technology works. Like if we just all lived in a post-scarcity society where all code was available on github and any time a program stops working for you you can just go in, fork the repo, make the change that fixes your problem. Blammo, your problem is solved as soon as you can write the code, and if anyone else has the problem they can use your change.

One can dream

Western Europe, 1950s era. Capitalism had to make compromises. The soviet union was right next door - if people realized that seizing the means of production would improve their quality of life, they'd have a communist revolution on their hands. So concessions were made. "See, you don't need communism to have a good life, we're giving you all those things too!"

And finally, the capitalists won and the soviet union was no more, parceled up and sold to the capital owners in the west. Now they don't feel the need to make concessions without a major communist power in their backyard. So they roll back the progress slowly, hoping no one notices.

Cameras in your fridge and pantry to keep tabs on what you have, computer vision to take inventory, clustering to figure out which goods can be interchanged with which, language modeling applied to a web crawler to identify the best deals, and then some conventional code to aggregate the results into a shopping list

Unless you're assuming that you're gonna be supplied APIs to all the grocery stores which have an incentive to prevent this sort of thing from happening, and also assuming that the end user is willing, able, and reliable enough to scan every barcode of everything they buy

This app basically depends on all the best ai we already have except for image generation
