In the days following the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, Snopes received multiple inquiries about a viral job posting seeking to fill his position.
"United Healthcare has already posted to fill the position of the recently assassinated CEO, Brian Thompson. Is it true?" one reader wrote via email.
The initial TikTok video sharing the purported job ad, posted by user @lolbrenden, had received more than 10.9 million views as of this writing. TikTok users flooded the comments section with responses indicating they believed the claim. "Definition of take care of yourself because that job will replace you no matter what," a top comment read.
We reached out to the creator of the video and will update this story if we receive a response.

We looked into the claim, and found no evidence the job posting was authentic. There are a few reasons we rate this claim fake; but most importantly, we did not find any evidence UnitedHealthcare posted such an opening.
First, although the screenshot of the job posting appears in the style of a LinkedIn job advertisement, we did not find any public job posting for CEO on the site. As of this writing, the only executive position advertised was for VP of Client Insights National Accounts. There were also several discrepancies between the two images, such as the wording of "over 100 people clicked apply" (as opposed to the fake post's wording: "over 100 applicants") and the color of the words "remote" and "full-time" (the fake post's are green). Below is what an authentic LinkedIn job posting for UnitedHealthcare would look like:

Second, the advertised salary range is inaccurate. While the fake job posting says the salary for CEO ranges between $300,000 and $450,000, according to The Associated Press, Thompson's salary, bonus and stock options awards added up to $10.2 million in 2023.
Lastly, it is uncommon for companies to hire CEOs externally. According to an assessment of S&P 500 companies by The Conference Board (a nonprofit think tank), 77% of new CEOs were internal hires in 2024.
In sum, because we found no evidence of UnitedHealthcare publishing a job posting to fill Thompson's role as CEO, we rate this claim fake.
