Yup. Trying to get various work critical specific pieces of software working on Linux is just not a reasonable concept. Dual boot is the only option.

I mean, I could make a list of things I think are problems, but I've been using it since a bit after 9/11 so I dont think my guesses would represent new user experiences. I am mostly going off what people tell me when they try to learn it.

otherwise it's hard to respond to such a vague statement

I wasn't writing advice for the devs, I was making a general statement about why foss stuff doesn't tend to suit glitzy, highly marketable front facing stuff, using gimp as an example

[–] socialjusticewizard 3 points 1 week ago

A person would have to known actors much better than I do for something like that, lol

[–] socialjusticewizard 1 points 1 week ago

I really hoped we millennials would remember getting shit on constantly and maybe not do it.

[–] socialjusticewizard 12 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Unless 3.0 has solved it, the gimp has a steep UI problem and a learning curve such that mass appeal on the website would be inappropriate anyway. I love it but I love it because I've been using it my whole life and know it very well. Foss in general struggles with useability due to a lot of hard to overcome problems - mainly, that by the time someone is ready to contribute to any given foss project, they're already intimately familiar with its foibles and probably have strong opinions about what UX elements are sacred cows and should not be fixed.

As a long time - pre version 2 - gimp user my first thought was "what, don't be ridiculous" and now I dont know what to feel. Why would you do this to me personally

[–] socialjusticewizard 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Man, this one is loaded. I use variants on the quantum.ogre all the time, and am widely considered to be an excellent dm. It's not about the ogre, it's about whether choices have an impact on the story. They can still do that even if minor parts of the set dressing - like whether or not you'll fight an ogre around the corner because you the DM spent ages prepping that encounter - are relatively constant

Oh, I didn't know that conversion, helpful.

The best way to write a good story, for me, is to write a story I want to read. That seems obvious but bear with me. If I plan out all the details, it's like someone spoiled the book for me, I just can't get into it. I have to create characters I'm interested, plunk them in a situation, and just start seeing what happens. I dont fret the little details unless they start getting me into a place I'm not enjoying. Later on I go back to the early parts and tie them together with whatever happened. Done this way, writing a story feels like reading a story, one that is specifically tailored to your own interests (and that none of your friends have read, so they can't talk to you about it)

I mean, I'm sure i don't need to tell you, a ton of the groundwork for this was laid by that "lovable idiot" and his handlers. Bush walked so trump could goose-step

[–] socialjusticewizard 27 points 2 weeks ago

It works for some people but everything i ever hear just sounds so high maintenance.

Then again, the people in comfortable stable poly relationships probably don't post much about it online

Idk. There's a selection process for people who become billionaires. Personally, I don't think it's really possible to become and remain one without a pretty low level of empathy.

YSK about socca (www.loveandlemons.com)

This is one of my go-to quick lunch recipes. It takes chickpea flour, water, a bit of olive oil, and salt. You do need to prep it a bit in advance to give the chickpea flour time to soak up the water, and then for the pan to heat up, but the actual cook time is minimal. Done right - which is easy - it's got a crisp, flavourful outside and a soft, almost custardy inner layer. It goes great with zatar seasoning on it, or just coarse salt, and because chickpea flour is pretty high protein, it's surprisingly filling.

It also makes a decent pizza crust substitute for gluten free folk! It's nothing like bread but it's super delicious with pizza-like toppings.

A pan of socca and some fresh veggies or a greek salad is a really nice, filling dinner when you want to take it easy.

I'm still somewhat new to MtG, and have mainly played commander, along with a bit of modern which was a little too intense for me. What are some good formats to look into for kitchen table, 2 player mtg with my wife? Commander is great but tends to want a 4 player format.

Bear in mind we'd rather not buy new cards, but used cards and proxies are fine, got no major price constraints since I'm happy to print up a card if it's going to be too hard to find.

I'm actually just doing this to learn how to post photos, the image itself is kinda garbage without my light box, but here you go: one of my glass-green and purple mercenaries!

I find all these metal plates and hard surfaces a lot tougher than organics.

I've had great recommendations on my niche hobbies and a few funny chains of pun posting, so we're almost fully operational now.

Here's an ode to crispy oven roasted beans and chickpeas. If you take pretty much any cooked pulse, toss it in flavours, and bake it, you can make them into crunchy little flavour nuggets to sprinkle on salads, in wraps, eat straight up, put in idk your breakfast cereal or whatever. I'm not your dad, you can decide. It's a great trick and I don't hear enough about people doing it. Did you know it also works with quinoa, giving it a light crispiness almost like puffed rice?

Sample recipe off the top of my head:

  • 1 cup cooked black beans
  • ~1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 2 tsp granulated onion

Toss together until well coated.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Spread beans out on parchment paper.
Bake for 45 minutes at 400f or until beans have split open like teeny baked potatoes. give em more time to make them crunchier.

Anyone else addicted to these? My wife thinks I'm going a bit overboard when I mix them into refries but yo dawg, we heard you like beans so...

I'm looking for a single head mid-range espresso maker for my workplace (Canada); two of our three people are real coffee fans (one used to own a cafe) and so I need something pretty special. Figured it's a good topic to, uh, try to get things brewing a bit here in the new community. Anyone got a specific recommendation?

... now I just have to wait a friggin year or whatever for my quad mechs (and I guess some other stuff).

Whoever says millenials don't understand delayed gratification anymore does not know about being a miniature gamer in the kickstarter age.

My kid, who is a terrible degenerate clanner, runs hell's horses as their main. Thus, they have a neverending thirst for things with treads and wheels instead of good solid stompy legs like Kerensky intended. Ironwind metals are a little fragile for an eleven year old (paint chipping etc) so I've been looking for stands in for a while.

As long as you're willing to either proxy the hell out of things or make your own stats, reaper CAV vehicles are a good option. The system is 10mm scale, and the mechs themselves mostly (though not universally) look a bit huge, but the vehicles are generally pretty okay looking next to catalyst mechs. The heavy vehicles are a bit huge, but work well for the assault-size vehicles that we get in BT.

Thought I'd toss this out for folks, and as soon as I learn how, I'll send pictures.

I'm not sure if I'm just not seeing it, but when I get a reply in my inbox, i don't have any buttons to reply back, or to link to see context. Is this a missing feature or am I just blind?

This community needs some attention!

So, fellow mechwarriors, what are you doing to store your mechs safely? I recently backed the mercenaries kickstarter, and I anticipate having dozens of mechs to store nicely. Right now I have them jammed into a plano box, but it's going to get small fast. Has anyone found a better, erm, dropship?

Finger on the pulse (self.vegetarian)

I noticed there didn't seem to be a vegetarian community, and sharing vegetarian recipes is one of my favourite uses of other threaded link-sharing websites, so I'll kick things off with a thread about beans and legumes - the pulse family. Anyone have a favourite use for these absurdly versatile vegetables?

Personally, I love aquafaba. The stuff is insane. This is the water that comes off canned chickpeas, and can be harvested from the thick discard water from any cooked beans as well. It can mimic egg whites in a huge number of uses, from mixed alcoholic drinks to meringue in the right circumstances. I eat eggs, but sparingly, and I can't believe how versatile this danged liquid is.
