FEMA is stretched not just by the brutal aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which killed more than 200 people and destroyed sections of western North Carolina. Its staff is also responding to flooding and landslides in Vermont, tornadoes in Kansas, the aftermath of Tropical Storm Debby in New York and Georgia and the Watch Fire in Arizona.

In one universe, Kamala Harris leads only narrowly in the national popular vote against Donald J. Trump, even as she holds a discernible edge in the Northern battlegrounds. The numbers look surprisingly similar to the 2022 midterm election.

In the other, Ms. Harris has a clear lead in the national vote, but the battlegrounds are very tight. It’s essentially a repeat of the 2020 election.

This divide is almost entirely explained by whether a pollster uses “weighting on recalled vote,” which means trying to account for how voters say they voted in the last election.

Just wildfires; the routine home accidents have a low enough annual risk that they're insurable at an affordable price.

How do you propose to make insurance affordable in a community where the risk of it burning to the ground is, say, 5% in any given year?

There are some parts of the US where they are not first-past-the-post.

  • Alaska - uses top 4 primary + ranked choice general
  • Maine - uses ranked choice voting
  • California & Washington - use a top-two primary

The Greens could effectively run in those places, as well as races where the Democrats aren't running a candidate.

But when I see them running for local office, they're basically running to be on the ballot, not mounting a serious effort to win.

I'd like to see the people who amplified her arrested; the people who have a large audience are the ones who should have known better, and whose amplification created the major issue.

The local NPR station has an answer:

‘Unbelievable’ insurance increases are walloping Nebraska homeowners. Climate change is a big reason why.

I suspect that hostility towards mask wearing and lack of maintenance due to the governor blocking congestion pricing are a much bigger deal

There are a lot of places in the western US where there aren't any insurers writing new policies anymore.
