I'd argue that your experience is an exception and not the rule. Most teenagers aren't nearly so politically involved. And at 29, I'm a very different person than when I was 20.

From what I understand, "whispers" were what private messages were called on twitch. And it's "then existing," I don't use twitch, but I guess it doesn't exist anymore, that's what they mean. Pretty poor wording though, don't blame you for not knowing what the hell they mean.
The trending page is horrible on mastodon. I wish they'd implement some better discovery features, but the devs seem to think that a better user experience would mean they're just as bad as twitter or something. I'm so rarely tempted to use it.
