Fortunately I've still got power, but a lot of friends don't. Makes up for the last big storm where I lost power for several days. Anyone else get hit hard?

You're probably getting downvotes because of the terrible title, but the article is interesting, and talks about putting this into practice:

Looks like the usual spelling is indeed "criminy", and "crimony" is listed as an alternate spelling in Wiktionary. TIL what the expression derives from:

A minced oath from "Christ's money", in reference to the silver that Judas was paid for betraying Jesus.

That India link is silly, especially with your angle. They're trying to say "believe our woo", not "you stole our woo". Every culture everywhere has come up with tons of bullshit, and the real work is proving what's true and what isn't. "Interpretations of the famous vedas" is of zero use to science, sorry.

With the new ordinance, vacant properties owners would have two years to work with the city to rehab, sell or demolish sites, with a one-year extension available to those demonstrating progress. Afterward, the city will fine every code violation up to $2,000 a month.

In the past, a property owner had to pay a vacancy fee of $7,000 a year. Now, they can be charged up to $24,000.

Officials closed the main gate to the Minnesota State Fair for nearly an hour Saturday after a nearby protest stopped traffic and bus services.

According to a statement from fair officials, the gate at Snelling Avenue and Midway Parkway was closed at 2 p.m. due to what appeared to be a pro-Palestinian demonstration.

“Select buses that utilize the gate were paused and pedestrians were redirected to other gates,” the statement read. “Operations resumed following the demonstration at approximately 2:50 p.m.”

Video posted on X at showed a group of people standing in the intersection, with some of them holding Palestinian flags, the area locked in conflict between Hamas and Israel. Cease-fire talks in the war are ongoing, though there were reports Saturday of Israeli airstrikes killing dozens in Gaza.

Fair officials have celebrated record attendance so far this year, marking the event’s opening two days as the most well-attended in Minnesota State Fair history. The record for State Fair attendance was set in 2019, when more than 2.1 million people visited the Great Minnesota Get-Together.

Going alone can be nice, depending on what you want to see/do vs what other people want to see/do. My mother isn't a fan of crowds either, but makes an exception for the state fair.

I'm going to try new stuff like the indigenous food lab that the other commenter mentioned, but yeah, I've also got favorites that I save room for. In my case it's the fry buckets, and the earth wings at French Meadow.

Neat! I wonder if the food lab is associated with Owmani. I went there a while back and had the cricket popcorn, which was weird but weirdly good. I really liked the food there, so I'm excited to see that there's something similar at the fair.

I'm split between a sarcastic "Won't anyone think of the corporations?!" response, and a "This is probably the only way to get real climate change action, when it affects their bottom line" response.

I also wonder how much time and money we're going to spend on breeding and genetic engineering to fix things that didn't need to break in the first place. Based on companies like Monsanto patenting seeds, I'm not enthusiastic about that future. "We've changed the climate so that you can't grow anything but our seeds that only work once" would be a great premise for some dystopian sci fi.

I wonder if that's where this character got his name from. He's from around the same time period

Neat! I can understand some of that, and I'd like to understand the rest. Is there a guide or explainer?
