I didn't downvote. But I didn't upvote either.

It's just not really a good meme at all, so it's going to get downvotes. That's what downvotes are for.

The more unusual circumstance is that it got so many upvotes despite being a crappy meme. This clearly indicates that we have a lot of Lemmy users who support trans youth. Good for us, that makes me glad. Still not good content for this particular community imho, so I didn't upvote.

[–] imaqtpie 7 points 6 days ago

Yeah I do this frequently. Then I randomly go back to people's profiles and often find interesting communities and threads that way.

It's not an entertaining meme

Nobody got time for that. But yeah this map seems to be more or less randomly generated, it messes with a lot of borders that are already geographically defined. Seems like they just made everything into an irregular shape and assumed people wouldn't look too closely.

US states were in large part created to reflect natural geographic divisions already. They were frequently drawn up on maps before having any significant population centers, so geographical boundaries were the primary focus. A secondary focus being equality, so not making any state too big or small relative to its neighbors.

Do we have yous/youse? According to my understanding that's technically not a real word yet, it's slang.

2nd person singular used to be thou/thee back in the middle ages, but it all eventually melded into you.

I feel like y'all is the newer American version of 2nd person plural, while yous/youse/yinz are the non-American English counterparts.

I have always used you guys in a gender neutral manner historically, but people occasionally got offended by that. So I started using y'all several years ago and it's been going pretty good. Although I did initially spell it like ya'll until someone corrected me on reddit 😅

My point is that technically you are still making decisions about what to do with some odors body parts without consent, as they can no longer consent. Is there really a difference?

That's a good point, you're right.

That's interesting about the eyes, I'm honestly not sure what to say about that.

[–] imaqtpie 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yeah most of the ones in the second list at least had a couple of notable things about them that kept them off the first list. I was hoping people with local experience would chime in if they had reason to dispute my rankings; I'm sure there's some cool aspects of these cities that I might not be aware of.

Carson City is nearby Lake Tahoe which is pretty awesome. Lansing is actually a decent sized city and has Michigan State University. Topeka is reasonably close to KC, and presumably has some other notable features 😅

Montgomery and Jackson are pretty dire but there's not really any better cities/options in Alabama or Mississippi, so I gave them an A for effort.

Wow, good source. 82% donor rate for the opt-out group versus 79% for the forced-choice is a smaller difference than I would have guessed.

[–] imaqtpie 6 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I'm pretty sure people do make their wishes clear regarding their funeral preparations. You can put that kind of stuff in your last will and I would assume it holds some legal weight.

I actually agree that organ donation should be opt-out, but there is an unavoidable argument against that. Namely, the fact that people have the right to opt-out at all implies that you have a responsibility to verify their informed consent before enrolling them in the procedure. At least, that would be the conventional wisdom according to the field of medical ethics.

There's honestly a lot of lame state capitals in the US, Europeans might be surprised. In Europe the national capital of each country is typically the biggest and most cosmopolitan city. This is not the case when it comes to state capitals in the US. Several of the most boring ones (Montpelier, Augusta, Pierre) have already been mentioned, so I'll just add a few others.

Indubitably Boring

  • Frankfort, Kentucky
  • Jefferson City, Missouri
  • Helena, Montana
  • Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Slightly Less Boring (honorable mentions)

  • Carson City, Nevada
  • Jackson, Mississippi
  • Topeka, Kansas
  • Olympia, Washington
  • Lansing, Michigan
  • Salem, Oregon
  • Trenton, New Jersey
  • Montgomery, Alabama
  • Springfield, Illinois
  • Tallahassee, Florida
  • Concord, New Hampshire

That sounds promising, I think you're right that it would be a significant improvement in donor rates over the opt-in system.

Reddit has decided to run another edition of r/place in mid July for some unimaginable reason.

https://sh.itjust.works/post/1387534

It seems to me that it would be stupid to not at least attempt to advertise for Lemmy given the perfect opportunity. Many have expressed concerns about giving reddit more traffic, but a few thousand users is less than a rounding error to reddit. However, getting a few thousand more redditors to move to Lemmy would be great for us.

Hopefully I can get a few sh.itheads to help in this noble endeavor. If not, at least I tried.

Don't mean to get in the middle of the Dieselpunk challenge but I figured the people here might want to take a shot at creating a banner as well. I'm going to leave that thread open for at least a week so you guys should have time.

Please post your best submissions to the Agora thread linked above

I will try to scan both threads to get all of the candidates before we vote, but the Agora thread is the official discussion, this was just cross-posted for awareness.

The two obvious themes in my mind are gears/some sort of complex machine, or computer hardware/circuits.

As an avid Lain Iwakura enjoyer, I added that screenshot because it's awesome and I think it'd be an extremely cool banner, but there are probably much cleaner designs out there that would be more welcoming to new users. I'm sure you guys will be able to come up with some in short order.

You can look on lemmyverse.net to get a quick overview of some other instance banners.

I really don’t know how the formatting and proportions are supposed to work but I will edit that in as soon as someone clarifies.

This discussion run for at least a week, and then we can take the most upvoted submissions in this thread and put them up for an official vote.

TheDude recently upgraded the server to the most recent version of Lemmy. You'll notice significant improvements to the user interface, and hopefully the functionality is also improved. There is no official changelog yet because this version is not yet finalized, but I'll link the GitHub releases page where it should eventually appear.

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/releases

Edit: 0.18.1 is now fully released and we have upgraded to the final version. You can view the link above for the changelog.

Better suited for the main community, the Agora is mainly for official discussions and votes.

Hello,

I'm the mod of Japanese Metal. For a few days now, the community appears empty to me, both on Liftoff and my browser on my desktop. Edit: it's fine if I view it on my lemm.ee account, but that's not optimal.

What might be the cause, and how do I fix it? Anyone with a similar problem?

Thanks in advance.

Say "aye" or yes" if you are in favor of defederation.

Say "nay" or "no" if you are against defederation.

All of the relevant information can be found in the link below. Thank you all for your input.

https://sh.itjust.works/post/564252

I can only hope for this level of engagement in all discussions going forward 😅

I apologize for the lack of clarity and structure surrounding the process and just know that we are working to streamline the process ASAP.

EDIT: If you post anything in addition to aye/yes/nay/no, it will be removed and I will reply to the comment with your vote.

I am not voting, I am simply cleaning up comments that try to continue the discussion. Just vote and get off the pot people.

If you're from another server, you don't get to vote

VOTE RESULT

In favor of defederation

We are now defederated from EH.

The mod team is currently examining the data in greater detail to arrive at a final count of legitimate votes. Nonetheless, whichever voting system/restrictions we arrive at, the result of the vote is not in question. I will update this post with the final count ASAP. Thank you for your participation, it was a largely successful debate and vote.

I've been experiencing a bug whereby my comments are not showing up on https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration. Perhaps on all of kbin, I'm too lazy to check.

https://sh.itjust.works/comment/500520

https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/109810/Kbin-Lemmy-has-just-ticked-over-100k-active-users

https://sh.itjust.works/comment/523173

https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/116113/It-was-fun-while-it-lasted

In both cases I copied the comment a few hours later on my kbin account which has the same name, and it posted instantly.

Anyone have any insight into what's going on here? You can tell that this is happening to multiple people because the number of comments doesn't line up exactly, but on the other hand the majority of the comments are federating successfully, as I can see comments from lemmy.world users there.

This is the kind of bug that really kills engagement. I demand compensation for all the upvotes I missed out on 😂
