A confirmed, yet still not resolved bug caused me and about 200 other people lose data (metadata) for tons of files. Well, at least 200 reacted to the GitHub bugreport I filled. I think you can easily find it because it's the most upvoted yet unresolved issue.

Besides this, it'd often give random errors and just not function properly. My favorites are the unexplained file locks: My brother in Christ, what do you mean error while deleting a file. It's 2023 holy shit, just delete the damn file. It's ridiculously unreliable and fragile. They have tons, thousands of bugreports open - yet they focus on pushing new, unwanted social features to become the new facebook and zoom. They definitely should focus on fixing the foundation first.

Can you link a $400 NUC (with 64GB RAM) that eats this server alive? (With also CPU benchmarks?)

You won't really find miniPCs with 2 dedicated NICs unfortunately.

That's an R730 and the Ciscos are all bids, not flash price, if I see it right.

I am not saying this R720 isn't overvalued or that he shouldn't get an R730 instead. I'm saying you are not getting an R740 for this price.

Where can I get an R740 for $400 with 192GB RAM?

Paperless, immich. seafile, nextcloud, minecraft, home-assistant, pihole, jellyfin - they all improve my or my family's life.

Well, I'd assume 8GB ram (ddr4 3200) dedicated to it and 4-6 ryzen (5700x) cores should be enough. Especially if I'm planning to host it for a max of... 30 users.

Thank you! I might give it a try again.

Are they federated? Did you change anything from the default / recommend settings?

Well, I can't recall every minute detail I've delt with a year ago. I shared my past experience and asked if it would be more or less the same.

Hey guys!

A year or so ago I tried hosting a federated matrix and synapse server. While at the beginning it seemed nice, the moment I tried to join a large room it died completely for 10-20 minutes while blasting my DNS server with 10K+ requests. Sometimes at the end it wouldn't join, while filling the logs with errors. It really didn't seem like a good user-experience. Ironically, one of the groups I tried to join was the support group, but I failed, because it was too big.

I am wondering if it has improved since, or it's pretty much the same.

At the same time, I'm also wondering if there's a good, fast self-hosted alternative, that kinda just works.
