How are you planning to setup the drives? Most zfs articles I have read say not to go past 12 drives in a single vdev. Are you going to do two vdevs of 12 drives raidz2 or something else?

I have been browsing the truenas forums a bit as I work on my build. The Ryzen were never officially meant to be used with ECC but it works. If you go with Intel core processors you will need a w680 chipset for official ECC support. Most people in the forums with your kind of setup seem to recommend a XEON E-2xxx processor of some kind that is used. You can pair that with ddr4 ECC memory which is easier to come by these days.

I've nearly got all my hardware for my build and am just waiting on whether to pull the trigger on some Seagate Exos 20TB drives.

I am looking to build a NAS server probably on truenas or possibly unraid using ECC memory. I think I want the latest and greatest 14th gen but am having issues finding a board based on the w680 that supports the 14th gen refresh. The Asus w680 pro seems like a good choice as I already have a fractal r4 case that would fit it. An Asus online support said only 12th/13th gen is supported with this board though but it is clear they were just reading what the website says. Is it expected that this processor should work? I am trying to time my purchases around black Friday hoping I get the best deals. I'd like to have IPMI support ideally with a built in KVM. I am not sure if the Asus can do that. I also plan to start with 6 drives in a zfs raid-z2 setup. It has been awhile since I scoped out building a server.
