I forget where I read it, it was a long time ago not too long after it came out. Either a review or interview. It’s entirely possible that it was exaggerated or invented by whoever wrote it, but I liked the idea so it became part of my head canon.
A quick search for confirmation didn’t turn up much.
A bit of a tenuous connection, but if I recall correctly this song was made in tandem with Squarepushers “Red Hot Car” when the pair challenged each other to make a “radio-friendly pop hit”, or something of that nature
