The older I get, the more I question the value of public companies vs the damage they do. As soon as you've got shareholders at large to please, you're incentivized to keep your share price going up above all else, especially in the short term. Global stock markets seemed like a great idea at the time, but I feel they're doing more damage than good at this end of capitalism.

Wow, it's pretty wild they didn't even attempt to encrypt or protect this data, even if it is local to your machine. What a treasure trove for malware to sift through.

The author had so many things to highlight that they didn't even mention "as of August 2024" being in the future, haha.

What a trainwreck. The fact it's giving anonymous Reddit comments and The Onion articles equal consideration with other sites is hilarious. If they're going to keep this, they need it to cite its sources at a bare minimum. Can't wait for this AI investor hype to die down.

Responding to eSafety's roadmap last year, the government set a few tests that any age verification scheme would have to meet. They included confidence it can't be circumvented, can be easily applied to companies based abroad, and don't risk the privacy of adults looking to legally access porn.

This is going absolutely nowhere then. All three of those bullet points are impossible problems on their own. What a waste of money.

I don't know about you, but if I must leak my private data like a sieve to use the internet, I'd much rather that data go to a government that isn't governing me!

Would love to see the same tests with an adblocker installed.

That's an antitrust case if ever I saw one.

And it's so nice having zero dependence on the cloud. If the internet drops out, everything still works, including the mobile app.

Ouch, 20% unemployment in China is rough. How tied to China's economic outlook do you think we're going to be in Oz?

I've found it really beneficial joining an instance that's hosted locally to my country and/or city. Not only can you take advantage of the "Local" filter to literally see local posts in your area, but you also get an amazing ping so everything feels super responsive.

Sorry for the Murdoch rag, but I thought we could do with a trashy article to lighten things up a bit. Anyone else claimed depreciation on a boob job or the family pet?

I don't think they seriously expected any third party apps to agree to the costs. They just wanted a plausible excuse to funnel everyone into their own app for data collection and advertising revenue. That's my best guess anyway, another business decision for the IPO.

Would be nice if there was legislation that prevented companies from doing this, so price increases couldn't be concealed so easily.

This might be a Lemmy question more than a Jerboa question, but no matter what I try I can't seem to mention myself in a comment and have it show up in my inbox. Is there a trick to mentioning someone? Or is this part of the app not working? Or do I need to wait for the federation to do some funky syncing between instances?

This is a feature, not a bug. But we definitely need a solution to make subscribing/coalescing them easier for users. Mastodon allows subscribing to topics (hashtags) - I think something similar is needed here, but that will evolve naturally over time.
