I was just reading this issue on Github last night and I really don't see how PeerTube is any better than a traditional server for hosting videos. The peer part of it seems to have such a miniscule impact on the whole thing that it just feels like a gimmick. I've read that the biggest problem for PeerTube instance hosts is storage and not the bandwidth. The only thing that peers can save you is tiny bit of bandwidth from what I understand.

So from what I've gathered, relying on peers only for hosting the video is completely unviable. And that makes sense, especially for old, unpopular videos, there will be no peers to begin with. Even if every video on the site is being "seeded" by viewers, the reliability of connection and bandwidth would be very bad because you can't know if the peer is some guy on the dial up connection. Even in the perfect scenario where everyone had very reliable connection and good bandwidth, the fact that browsers don't support p2p protocol and rely on a hack/workaround to use it, will mean that there will be delays. So starting the video and rewinding would be painfully slow.

Is there something that I'm missing, or is PeerTube really not that much better than a "normal" video hosting server?

That's cool, I might try it on the phone myself :D

What actually reminded me of the original, is this game that I accidently stumbled upon while checking out the Steam summer sale today.

mpv player should be able to do it, if you install the script.

Might be easier/faster to find the video in lower quality to download?

Pro tip: Point the fan so that it blows outside and DO NOT put it directly on the window or right next to it. Instead, move it ~50cm away from the window to take advantage of Bernoulli's principle (push the air out more efficiently by pulling the air surrounding the fan).

You can cool down the room even if the door is closed. You are lowering the pressure inside your room so the outside air is forced to rush in. If you place the fan like I explained, and point it at the lower part of your window and you put your hand next to the upper part of the window, you will feel the cold air coming in.

Everything else requires effort.

Yeah it is visible, but much more subtle than on your original picture in the post.

Easier to see against the black background:

Maybe it's just a temporary image retention? Was there something (bright or white) previously at that section of the screen? Like some app that you use often?

OLED burn-in maybe?

It seems like I'm logged out every time I initially load a page, but if I refresh the page or open a link (within my instance) in a new tab, I'm logged in again...

I saw quite a few posts on this topic but I never found a solution...Is there some workaround for this?

Is this a common knowledge? Is this an old feature? I accidentally found about it few days ago.

An impressive feature is their bright red colored eyes with vertical slits. They do not have a true eyelid, but rather a nictitating membrane that allows light to enter the eye so that they will awaken when predators are approaching.

Using this alternative front end mlmym. (example: https://old.lemmy.world/, https://old.lemmy.ca/, https://old.lemmy.sdf.org/ )

I partially know the answer to this question...You cannot host videos directly on Lemmy, but that is understandable, video hosting is pretty expensive, but Lemmy also doesn't support video embeds(videos don't play within Lemmy), which means that you will have to open the link in a new tab/window to watch it. Which is pretty annoying/inconvenient, and that is probably the main reason why video/gif posts are just not popular here. Even if someone does post it, users mostly can't be bothered to open it.

I've read somewhere that this is intentional and that is "privacy and security matter". But that kind of doesn't make sense to me. Alright, I understand how it can be a privacy concern, since the sites on which the videos are hosted can track you. But we switched from Reddit...Not really known for being privacy friendly... People that are concerned about their privacy will know what to do/not to do.

I'm not knowledgable enough to understand how it can be a security matter. I guess if the video is hosted on a malicious site...But wouldn't that be easily solved by simply allowing only trusted, well known sites?

Video is simply the most superior type of media there is, and I think that not having easy access to it on Lemmy is hurting it.

Are there any other reasons why we don't see video posts on Lemmy, and are there any plans to make videos more easily consumable on Lemmy?
