My completely unsubstantiated conspiracy theory is that Sony had a warehouse full of phones that were semi functional but didn’t pass QA, and they jury rigged this thing as a way to repurpose them, so even if they only sell a hundred K or so it’s still a win

You can get a lightly used one for around $800, if there are some good sales this holiday season the price will drop even further.
