lmao Marshall's batteries was at Canterbury Rd there at Cooks River for years, and there were heaps of industrial places along the river.

I remember seeing trucks coming down to collect all the dead fish that were stinking the place out. Who knows what caused that.

The "Sugarworks" sounds so tame and nice. But it was sugarmills originally and they closed in 1854. What was it since then? It was used as a butter factory by Foley Bros and from 1900 until 1908 by Denham Bros as the Canterbury Bacon Factory. Huttons owned it from 1908-1982. It was a slaughterhouse up until 1950, then used for producing smallgoods. I suppose "Old Sugarmill" sounds a lot better than "Old Slaughterhouse" for apartments. (Interestingly, wikipedia and it's source is incorrect on Huttons. I suspect a transposition error of 1980 instead of 1908)

Pollution of the river has been going on for a lot longer than that.

There's shit in that river bed that is a lot worse than shit. And you could never get it out of the river bed.

Do NOT swim in it, and do NOT fish in it.

Sigh, first we had some religious whacko's wrecking indigenous art, now these whackos from the Cult of the Self.

Can't we just leave other people's shit alone, and all just get along ?

It can work until they capture the regulator, and then become as one.

"The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which."

"And the child shall be born on the winter solstice.

They shall be named landsharkkidd"

I smell an epic trilogy coming on....

Bruh! How's he hanging on to the wall?

if need be

Yeah. After thinking some more, that might be the best approach for now.

I'm not totally against gambling, and in general I'm against banning things that are legal, within society norms etc.

Maybe it won't turn out to be a big deal. So wait and see is probably the way to go.

Something I stumbled upon the other day that caught my eye. Retrofitting removable double glazing!

"Up to 40% of a home's heating energy" can be lost through windows.

This youtube vid outlines how to do it. You could probably find the bits and pieces at Bunnings, ebay etc. I guess shipping costs for a big piece of clear acrylic would probably start to get expensive, but maybe it can be ordered somewhere, and pick up yourself.

The other temporary one, which is even simpler though not as elegant is bubble wrap. Basically, you can just spray water on your window and the bubble wrap will stick! The downside on is you don't have a view out your window, and if you want to open a window, you need to pull it down, then reapply it again when you close the window.

The best thing about these it that they might be useful for anyone renting. Also if you're in units etc where you can't get fully double glazed windows because the body corporate won't allow anything different. You could still apply this on the inside cheaply and easily with most of the same benefits of getting fully double glazed windows installed.

I was having a look through one of their daily threads, and there was a bunch of active /r/melbourne people that were basically saying they had migrated to lemmy. They were contacting each other on reddit (PM I guess) and then just joining up.

Mass migration lol. So they 3 times more subscribers and seems like these were the core of /r/melbourne.

FIRST POST!!

Ahh dammit! I'm too late!

But I too like it a bit slower. And the lack of trolls and bots is nice too. They haven't made it here. Yet.
