I vote to defederate. Like I said before, I was looking for an Oregon community and the only one that showed up in search results was the exploding heads one, which had a long history of posts denigrating trans and homeless people. In this case, I think no content is better than awful content. I wouldn't want some Lemmy newbie joining this server and misconstruing the Oregon community federated from them as our own.

I'm really hoping that someday we'll have a process to enable migration like a DHT and a user private key that allows them to send out a message like "i was [email protected] but now I'm [email protected]"... I heard talks about cross-fediverse account linking (maybe like keybase?) So hopefully something like that

I've been using this instance more than beehaw cause i wanted a more broad federation view, but i don't want this place to become a Nazi bar. That small sub may grow. If it isn't banned then I'll probably move again and welcome the defedration

Edit: Actually I had an experience as a result of exploding-heads because I was looking for an Oregon community and came across their oregon one (archive link), which included demonizing homeless and trans people. I ended up blocking it. This isn't just a bandwagon. I don't want others on this instance to be lured into those hateful rabbit holes. I ended up joining the PNW community on lemmy.world

While most of the people here upset and rightfully so, we have got to move past the angst to actually build this place out.

We have to recreate the environment and communities we've created on on Reddit here, so that people don't feel like they're missing out being on kbin.

That way, the next time Spez goes full Elon, we already have everything in place to make the jump.

I help run r/MMA on Reddit. We aggregate news as well as bringing on MMA figures for AMAs.

We, like many other magazines here, will need a way to quickly aggregate breaking news onto our magazine, and the easiest way to do that is going to be through a bot that mirrors submissions to our subreddit.

At least for the mags that rely on breaking news, if we implement this at scale, the end user wont be missing much by migrating over here if they get all the same great breaking news.

Do we have any bot builders in the house who could take this on as a project?

We would be leveraging Reddit's own userbase at scale to better kbin, and eventually beat them in the long run. That's the biggest L we could ever deal them.

I made an account here as a beehaw user and I'm glad that the two mod teams are in discussion. Servers have the right to cordon off their users, but I'd hate to miss out on the content. I feel mixed on the decision, as is represented by my dual accounts.
