When I was a new grad I was so excited to work the 9-5, thought I was gonna work on so many cool things and accomplish a ton. That obviously did not happen and these days it really feels like my entire job is to prove someone else’s impact. Everything feels meaningless and I’m absolutely sick of it, but this 9-5 grind is the only thing I ever envisioned myself to do. Does anyone else feel this way, and are there any routes out? What fields do people pivot to these days completely outside of technical roles?

As a sales associate of luxury goods store, do you see customers wearing FANG likely to spend more or less (bay area)? Lets say you are in luxury stores like Hermes, Chanel, Patek Phillips, Rolex, etc

So my girlfriend wants me to propose, saying it’s time we get engaged and try living together. And then get married by end of next year. I am 26, she is 24 and we have been together for 4 years. I said I am no where near enough secure yet, and I want to get married by 29 - 30 and get engaged at 28.

I started working only about 2.5 years ago and I’m located in Chicago, and have trouble saving barely right now. Also my girlfriend doesn’t make much, around 60k, and said we can move in to the my place and she will pick up bills such as vacations and other fun expenses while I continue to pay for main expenses due to salary disparity.

My financials currently are:
120k cash saved
0 debt
10k in 401k
$2-3.5k monthly costs

Can I somehow make this move or am I right I am no where close enough to make this move yet. I also wanted to save an try to FIRE for myself, but she said I am over doing it and to stop worrying about money.

Never seen it before, in many years living around Seattle area all the homeless I saw were black, white and a few Latinos.

Recently I have begun to see Indians at the side of the road begging for money from passing cars. In one case it was a woman with her kids. In another case an Indian dude with his whole family sitting there and in another case just an Indian dude. They all looked healthy and able.

Granted that's only 3 or 4 homeless Indians where I see dozens of homeless from other backgrounds. Just that the Indians stood out really only because I had never seen it before. Like, ever.

I can't believe these people came as h1b. I did read in the news that Indians are starting to cross illegally on the Mexican border and other means of crossing illegally. Is that what's happening?

Anyone else see this?

Please don't think this is an anti Indian thread, it's really very rare and that's why it's notable. Obviously India itself has a lot of poverty too, so maybe some of it is bleeding over here now.

The post federated to lemmy.ml as this post, and currently has 37 upvotes.

Am I missing something? I'd totally expect those upvote counts to be shown on my instance as well.
