seems like it would be better to just continually have extra drives on hand and replenish it every X years then try a 'one and done' approach and hope they will work in 50 years. Especially considering any SSD you buy today will be underwhelming in terms of performance and capacity in 20 years (yet alone 50).

any downsides to running tailscale? seems like it might just be adding risk (though minor) with little upside.

there is no guarantee whats in it, but if it's the WD Ultrastar DC HC550, then they are fine. I've never used these 'as is' just shucked.

Hard disagree. If you have fun in any aspects of a hobby, it's never a 'waste of life', even if some might find that part boring.
