Argh. Reports that Jesus is out with a groin injury.

“assuming Martinelli finds his form”, at a guess.

A classic of Australian, early 90s, indie rock. This is from an 8 track mini album called _ Octopus_. Seek out their album Penny Century(1991). It’s terrific.

Yes, I too think that this is what a band would sound like if Billy Corgan decided to make music like this. I didn’t quite get the same tingle of excitement with Silversun Puckups when I first heard them as I did with Smashing Pumpkins, though.

I find the songs of Edinburgh troubadour, Hamish Hawk, to be witty, quirky and tuneful. He’s got some good tunes.

From what little I know of this band, having just discovered them, their sound varies quite a lot. Dipping into their YT channel has revealed quite a range of styles. I found more than a few songs that I thought were pretty good, in different ways.

As a bonus, Hitsujibungaku/羊文学 means “Sheep Literature”. Not a band name I would choose, but given it is, why not do a collab with Aardman and do a version of the Shaun the Sheep song?

I’ve dipped into the band’s back catalogue before and enjoy the odd song or two. Here’s one from the Physical Thrills album that I don’t mind.

Remaining one of my favourite nu-gaze bands. Here’s a nice vid of a song from FTH’s final album.

You’re welcome!

Many music fans will know of The Avalanches’ breakout, debut album Since I left You (2000). Fewer will know that they started out as more of a noise punk band, with elements of hip hop and electronic music nudging in. They were often compared to The Beastie Boys, which is probably why I started to notice them. The 2 tracks in this clip are from their EP El Producto (1998)

This live performance was on a Saturday morning TV show called Recovery, on ABC TV (Australia).

I was lucky enough to be at a show they played on New Year’s eve in ~~2000~~ 1998, ~~which was only a month after Since I left You was first released~~. It was so good.

If you get a chance, go check out this performance in the finals of the DMC World DJ Championship in ‘99. You might recognise the first record he plays, in particular. Dexta was in The Avalanches’ for a while.

Miki and her chums doing a cover of her own song that was originally recorded by Lush in the early 90s.

The other MB3 stuff sounds quite good.

Congrats to Gooner, Remco Evenepoel, who has won both the cycling time trial and road race at the Olympics. 🥇🥇

Difficult to decide if this is a Daily discussion topic or its own post level…given that it's Tim Stillman…

Needed that one

Thought some might enjoy this solo tune that was performed at a live-to-air session at a great, local (to me) community radio station, here in Melbourne.

This is a great cover version and one of my favourite SK tracks. I hadn't seen that performance before. I wonder what its story is?

Hi AN friends. We have lost one of the great ones over the weekend. I've had The Chills and Martin Phillipps associated records playing on repeat, since I found out about his passing at the age of 61 in in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

If you don't know them, here's a piece on the Radio NZ website and one on Pitchfork, with some background.

The Chills were very influential to a host of musicians like R.E.M, Pavement, Yo La Tengo and many more. His passing has attracted a series of tributes from all over.

On a personal level, I first heard The Chills at a formative time in my life and Martin Phillipps' music, which has more breadth than some might think, broadened my horizons…I have been a fan ever since.

If you want to hear more, hear is a Songwhip page, so you can track some more tunes down.

Hello Gooners. It’s probably understandable that it’s pretty hard to find a photo of HK with the official Bundesliga top goal scorer trophy, the Torjägerkanone. However, I did stumble across this photo of a January visit to a Bayern fan club, where they presented him with a kanone snuff box. I laughed.

Enjoy.
