Looking for examples of well shot, but horrible movies.

Prometheus is a good example. Beautifully shot, excellent cast, amazing effects...TERRIBLE MOVIE. I tried rewatching it, and am just in awe of horribly written it is. Theres a new plot hole introduced almost every time someone speaks.

This one I think is a bit divisive but that is how I felt about The Last Jedi. It was a beautifully shot movie that was not a good movie. Maybe not terrible but not good.

Ironically, I think it's my favorite out of the new trilogy in hindsight. Still bad, but my favorite.

  • E7: a fan servicey remake of E4
  • E8: something completely new/different, but unfitting
  • E9: distilled incoherence

I would probably agree with you if you could cut out the entire sub plot with Finn and Rose visiting that planet. It was so pointless.

Ugh exactly.

Oooh. Good call. I didn't care for any of the new Star Wars mainline films whatsoever.

Might be controversial but Interstellar. The movie so wanted to be another Space Odyssey and it looks gorgeous, but the whole story is complete ass.

The story in Space Odyssey was pretty poor too. 20 minutes of apes screaming, computer kills astronauts (good bit), then a 20 minute acid trip that ends up in a hotel room. The special effects in space were amazing, but overall, meh.

Fair. It helps to read the Clarke book first, Kubrick didn't really bother to make the story clear, and I'm pretty sure he even misunderstood the ending.

I think once you know what's actually happening, it becomes more watchable. I read a post about it ages ago and watching it after that was amazing.

I love this movie as well, but cringe at the awful "love is stronger than gravity" crap 🤮 Somebody needs to recut that movie with all that junk taken out.

Ya know, I used to think that too, but that movie is very rewatchable. I thought for sure I'd hate it on rewatch, but I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

Yup. Fantastic movie ruined by the ending.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Agreed. That movie is absolutely horrible, but it’s nice to look at. Not nice enough to look at to tolerate that horrible movie again though.

An old girlfriend of mine used to watch a lot of Christian themed "feel good" family films that I'll never remember the names of and most people have probably never heard of. They were awful dogshit but I swear that industry must have some of the best cinematographers working for it. Beautifully shot movies with cliche characters and safe, predictable storylines.

The 1984 version of Dune by David Lynch. It’s such a gorgeous movie with a script that was hacked up so badly no one wanted to be associated with it.

Are DC movies contenders here?

Because a lot of them are beautifully shot, especially Zack Snyder ones, but they are horrible in story.

Zack Snyder seems to excel in this category. Just sure I have ever seen a good ZS movie.

I was late to the party on Captain Marvel and was expecting to hate it but came away decently satisfied with it and I think it's in large part due to the cinematography. It wasn't anything mind blowing but I was surprised to see a more indie-like aesthetically pleasing feel to a lot of the shots in it.

Will never investigate or watch these, but good to know. I suppose there is a lot of money in religion, so not shocked they could afford such nice things.
