Raph Koster is an absolute legend. His take on Triple A game budgets disincentivsing risks is pretty spot on in this too. Though I don't think he's giving the indie scene enough credit, creativity is alive and well if you know where to look.

He was also creative director for the original Ultima Online game and Star Wars Galaxies... both awesome and innovative MMOs at the time...

Nah. There's a line of game devs from 2-3 decades ago who try to make a game today and fail miserably. If they've been absent long enough, their skillset is gone.

I say that with real sadness though. As I'm watching my favorite devs from 2000s make blockchain games or chase after AI NFTs or worse, just remake the games they became famous for but without any modern conveniences.
