Welcome. It's gonna take everyone's effort to make KBIN fun. Upload content daily, and interact with other people's content that you have something to say about. It's gonna take effort from all of us.

This (in Reddit parlance). Kbin has come a long way even in the short time since I came here at the beginning of the reddit protest a few weeks ago. I am hoping with the second influx of refugees it will get even better now.

Let's hope so. The more I think about it, the more I believe fediverse is the future.

It's a clear solution to the kind of issues happening with Twitter and reddit right now.

Excited to watch it grow and hope the API comes soon! At least the webapp is fairly nice in the mean time.

I may be out of the loop, but I've seen that kbin has an API. Is it not complete yet, or something?

@Calcharger Apollo stopped working for me a little after 7 ET. Doing a little cleanup then deleting it all tomorrow. I'm happy to be here

Hello, I’m here now too from Apollo. Hoping to get the hang of this website so I can delete my Reddit account all together.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

You will! For now, if you have questions, check out /m/kbinmeta. Folks are willing to help around here

Sup and welcome from an ex-Boost enjoyer! Things are still extremely young here, so I'd ask some forgiveness while our fantastic dev works himself to the bone to set everything in order. There is only one of him, he did not think his pet project was going to be on the radar, and he only took on helpers a few days ago.

Minor bugs aside, it's surprisingly nice here and I hope you and any others in the comments enjoy yourselves. If there's anything you need help with, just ask around. 99.9% of us only just learned the ropes ourselves, so we won't judge. Getting used to the fediverse is super weird

new people: if you want to help Ernest out, consider donating to him here

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago

welcome! In case the fediverse seems confusing/weird to you now, I'm sure you'll get used to it pretty quickly, you'll figure out it doesn't differ from Reddit all that much :')

If you put the phone in airplane mode, you can get the app to load the UI at least. Doesn't do/mean anything but I suspect I'll be doing it out of nostalgia a lot in the coming months.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Just crashes for me. I can't even get it to load.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I got that loading screen then force closed Apollo because I thought to myself β€œit’s not even midnight yet”. Now Apollo just crashes for me as well.

I use Sync too, mine is Error 401. So long and thanks for the memories! I'll be waiting patiently for the kbin app by ljdawson.

Sync for lemmy is in the works at least!

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You just missed it. We did a Taco Bell run. You can have my extra taco, though.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Goddammit, now I want tacos.

Welcome, fellow refugee.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

A fellow homosapien! Welcome to the party! It's pretty nice around here and I hope you enjoy it.

Baconreader too is no longer working!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I’m also here. Still a little confused, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it eventually.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Welcome! I’m also on kbin.social and have been here a few weeks, so if you’re curious or confused about anything I’m more than happy to help. It doesn’t take long to get the hang of things here, you’ll be at home in no time. :)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Welcome. It will become familiar with some time. If you have questions, check out /m/kbinmeta. Folks here are pretty willing to help.

Don't worry, you'll catch on soon enough. Just canoodle around until something interesting hits you and then follow the "how federation works" rabbit hole until it stops making sense. Rinse and repeat. Remember that things are still in flux, so you'll probably run into bugs at some point. Using the platform gets significantly easier once you can identify what proper operation.

For example, if I let a kbin thread sit in a background tab for too long, it loses sync with the server. Once I reach the tab, and interaction that deals with storage (voting, commenting, etc.) brings me to 1 or 2 error pages. At first I thought this was a problem with which instance I joined or some federation thing I didn't understand. Nope. It's a minor bug. Just needed to refresh the page to get around it.

The fediverse is getting better and more stable every day. There's still a lot to be done, but the devs are doing a solid job. A couple weeks ago there were 300 kbin users. Now there are 235,000. Lemmy went from 50k to 1.5m. That's crazy!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Welcome aboard! Which app is that?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Sync for Reddit. IMO the best Reddit app for Android.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

yeah, it was my favorite as well - I played around with RIF and Boost, but kept coming back to Sync. At least LJ has confirmed he'll be developing Sync for Lemmy.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I used basically all of them, Sync was amazing and I'm super stoked for Sync for Lemmy/kbin support once it's possible

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

yeah, that's what I'm waiting for as well. I'm not a huge fan of the webapp on mobile at least, but it's so much better than reddit

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I agree, it was the best on android. Before switching devices I was there in the beginning of Sync for Reddit during its beta.

Welcome! Thanks for being here, it’s a pleasure to have you!

Most of us are new here. It's like the great Digg migration years back!

Learning a new platform is fun, and I can't wait to see this take off as Reddit becomes a shell of it's former self.

Welcome aboard matey

I’ve been trying to get up and running in the fediverse since Tuesday. I have registered for accounts with several Lemmy instances (https://sh.itjust.works/, lemmy.srv.eco, and others). In every case I haven’t gotten a registration email. When I try to log in I get an error saying that my email is not verified. It’s frustrating because I’ve downloaded Liftoff and wefwef and Jeroba - but I can’t sign in to any account to participate.

I’m glad that my account registration worked for kbin. If anyone has experience registering with lemmy would be great to understand what I’m doing wrong or if it really is that these servers are so backed up that they are not sending out automated emails. Or can I use an email address to register with only one lenmy instance and never with any other?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I had a hard time registering with beehaw.org during the last growth spurt. It took a few days for the registration to go through. Once it did, I got approved right away. Give it a few days to calm down. Of course, now that you are on kbin, you really don't have to sign up anywhere else for most purposes.
