I had that with masto. Not so much with Lemmy. I just sub to all "clone" communities, especially meme ones.

Do you mind sharing how to sub clone communities instead of the actual one on another instance?
Sorry, I suppose, I used confusing terminology.
I mean, for instance, there are multiple, idk, Technology oriented communities. I just subscribe to all of them, or at least the ones with a significant amount of users. In time, a "main" one will probably emerge among them.
I'm fickle as fuck and not ashamed of it lol.
Cats don't give a fuck where you think they "should" poop, they will go in the most suitable place they can find, and it's your job to make sure their litter box is the most suitable place. If they go somewhere else it's because you failed at your job.
And if cats = users and litterboxes = websites, Reddit would still be completely full of shit.
Sometimes when my cat is unhappy with his litter box (even after I clean it) he goes on a carpet. Never anywhere else. Always a carpet.

My cat always insisted on coughing up a fur ball onto the carpet. Didn't matter if she was in the middle of the giant tiled kitchen and dining room, the second she started hacking it up she made a beeline for the carpet. Pissed me off to no end, I actually struggled to hold her over the tile the one time I caught her so I could clean it without having to break out the carpet cleaning supplies at 2am.
That's her spot now.
Mine does the same, usually directly in front of their litterbox as an act of protest.

Does your "home" instance make any difference at all?
For a new user? No. Makes no difference.
Later down the line? Yeah, definitely. Your home instance determines the following things:

Who your admin is. Your admin has a lot of control over the instance. If spez started an instance, I'm fairly confident the entire fediverse community would avoid it.

What the rules are. How strict is the moderation? What are the standards you're supposed to hold yourself to? Some are lax, some are more stringent.

How popular is your instance? In general, less popular = better. You're gonna see the big recommended instances buckle and error over the course of the day. I'm kinda guilty of this, being on sh.itjust.works, but if it gets too bad I'll probably make myself a temporary account on another instance. I really like how @[email protected] is organizing stuff and I want the community to succeed. If that means reducing the load for a bit, I'll happily do it.

Not a gigantic amount, tbh. I took a quick look at the post & comment history of your admins (@[email protected] and @[email protected]), they seem like cool people. The rules seem reasonable. No red flags that I can spot on a cursory poke around.
I have chosen it as I started using Lemmy directly from a client for Android called Jerboa, and was one of the last listed choices to login. So I figured it must not be one of the most actives so I could not contribute to the overloading of others.

Sometimes if the instance creator has certain restrictions (rare). Also it affects what posts show up in the "Local" tab (posts from communities that are hosted on that instance). In the "Communities" tab it will show communities that people on your instance are subscribed to. If your instance goes down, you will lose your account I think.
