Memmy is an early fave (posting from it now) but it reminds me so much of the Dec-Feb app development days for Mastodon. So many fun options to try out!

I have those four as well! I’m bouncing between Mlem and Memmy, both of which are impressive, especially given that they’re still under heavy development. I need to spend more time using liftoff and thunder.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I’ve been doing the same. I have all 4 but most of my time is spent on Memmy but Mlem is quickly catching up.

The Memmy dev has been crushing it with one update a day while balancing bug fixes & quality of life updates. I have no idea when that dev sleeps or takes a break.

Mlem seems to be taking the approach of doing less frequent updates with more content. The last Mlem release had some good updates in there, so I’m glad to see the swap in lead dev didn’t distract them too much.

Same. I think they’re dropping notifications for Mlem today, which I think closes out the basic app functions. I think after that Memmy and Mlem are neck-and-neck.

FWIW … Memmy is the only one so far that can save images to your device. I really need this feature so I can pass memes around to the guys in the group chat at work.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm so used to screenshots now, I haven't even noticed! ha!

[–] DeepChill 6 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I hate screenshots cuz they’re almost always lower quality than the original, larger file size and always contain all the extra garbage that’s totally unnecessary (battery level, WiFi, time etc). Having the original image/video is just so much better.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I thought I was the only one who got bothered by all the UI crap on screenshots. Glad to encounter a kindred spirit.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Abdroid 13 (at least on Pixel) screenshots now without the top bar (clock, wifi, battery, etc), just the front app's screen. I was surprised by this after the June update.

You are right though, don't get me wrong.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Hopefully that'll come to the rest of us 'cause it's definitely not the case on Sony right now.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not sure what you are using for screenshots but on iPhone, screenshots take you immediately to an edit screen where you can crop & do markup. And the compression is so minimal, I have yet to see a quality issue.

Added bonus was on iOS 16 you could “Copy & Delete” after you were done to avoid filling up your phone memory with random temporary junk.

The only time I save now is if it’s text heavy since on iPhone you can highlight & copy text off an image which I’ll use for alt text for accessibility or to help title/caption a post.

iOS saves screenshots as PNG files that are significantly larger than the original file. Have a look at the two screenshots I’m attaching. I know, I know… screenshot of a screenshot. One is the meme saved directly from Memmy as a jpeg and the other is a screenshot that has been cropped as you suggest to remove all the unnecessary junk and borders. I don’t know about you but I’d rather have the original jpeg.

I’ve now tried out Memmy, Mlem, and typing this from a recently downloaded Thunder. So far, I’m Digging Mlem since it’s been the closet to Apollo in terms of look and navigation with it’s intuitive use of swiping. Heard Artemis will be integrating something similar so looking forward to trying that as well. I do prefer Memmy’s response options over Mlem’s though. Their text formatting seems more developed.

Glad to see Mlem in your list! We just dropped a massive update (which you have). More regular updates will coming in the future!

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Be sure to also try the web app, wefwef. It’s surprisingly excellent! https://wefwef.app/

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

You can also use it as a PWA, it will be just like a normal app

[–] ryguyflyguy 3 points 1 year ago

Hadn’t heard of this before but just been playing around with it and it’s actually pretty polished

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago

Testing all 4, so far I have to give it to Memmy.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago

+1 here, which do you like the most? I’ve been running Memmy and currently happy with it outside of a few misc design choices (couldn’t figure out how to reply for hours rofl)

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Memmy so far, but Mlem starts catching up. Memmy has more active devs tho. I feel like Limbo is not as developed and seems to be a inspired by the „original“ reddit app. Thunder seems nice too, haven’t tried that much so far but definitely inspired by Apollo as well.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Can you search for communities on Mlem? I have Memmy and Mlem, but Nemmy seems much easier to search…

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes you can since ever. When in your feed just tap on the middle too and then again on community…

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Thanks, just tried it.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I’d have to put my vote in for Mlem. Super easy to use, and just plain works.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Can you multiple account like you can with Lemmy? I’m going back and forth, and I like both so far. I like the dark purple theme in Lemmy

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yes. Same with Memmy

Weirdness with accounts on liftoff. You NEED to have multiple since it doesn’t seem to allow federated interaction. Like I can be logged into my lemmy.world and see lemmy.ml stuff but if I try to vote or comment it will tell me I’m not on the right server account so I can’t do that.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thank you!

I was beginning to wonder if I just didn't understand how the Fediverse works. I see posts but when I try to upvote and/or comment on them I get an error that I'm not logged in.

So just to be clear: With my account on lemmy.world, and that instance being federated with lemmy.ml, I should be able to interact with communities / posts / comments from both just the same? (I get the deal with beehaw…)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes! But it is currently not working that way in liftoff.

Memmy, Mlem both work as intended

For instance, this entire thread is on lemmy.ml, I’m replying using my lemmy.world account, using Memmy app

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Okay then. I'm sure the Liftoff devs are aware of, and working on, a fix.

I have to say this is a very exciting time to be here! I haven't had this much fun since I left Digg for reddit cough cough years ago.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I found a fix for that. On you homepage go to the top and instead of subscribed, for example, choose the subscribed under your instance. If you did it right it should say subscribed@lemmyinstance at the top. An example for my instance:

Ive been using Memmy and Mlem and both are great. I think overall Memmy feels a bit more ahead in terms of features particularly after the latest few updates. The main think I miss in Mlem is the availability to zoom in on images and in Memmy a way to change font size.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

I’ve also been testing all 4 options for iOS. There’s pros and cons to each, but my favorite so far is Memmy. It’s come so far in such a short period of time and will only continue to get better.

Having so many options is such a blessing though! I’m excited to continue watching each one grow!

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm on Android, and I'm trying liftoff, jerboa, connect, and the Lemmy app. I liked jerboa the best, but I can't say how it's latest update is until world updates its server to 18.1. Really liking Liftoff, but I do use the Lemmy app for certain things that aren't added to the others yet. I'll keep using them all for awhile, until things settle down and the devs have a chance to catch up.

[–] Cantankerousnuts 2 points 1 year ago

All I want is for ONE of them to have the "hide read" functionality. I'll put up with any bug for a while for that one feature.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

why are new initiatives always coming on iOS first? ... I mean, there's more android devices worldwide

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

there’s not! Check the list of apps in development and have fun! https://lemmy.world/post/465785

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

If Mlem supported iOS 15 that would have been in my list too

Not going to lose jailbreak over it

[–] ryguyflyguy 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Agree, Mlem is also quite good but the Memmy dev is killing it with the daily updates

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

for reals. Reminds me a bit of the Ice Cubes developer on Mastodon, no sleep, only app development. lol

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I'm using liftoff, and it's nice, but I'm still waiting for my RIF clone.

Seriously, no arbitrary vacant space between elements, my kingdom for no arbitrary vacant space between elements! Let me fill my screen with text and images so I don't have to scroll as much.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

I’ll hopefully be adding another one to this list in the next week or so. I made some great progress in my swift based iOS app, currently codenamed Lemming (this is going to change before release). Of course I’m taking inspiration from Apollo as I will greatly miss using the app. I’ll be sharing some more details about this project soon.

Also, if anyone has any naming suggestions, I am open to feedback. I was thinking possibly naming it Arctic as in the native territory for lemmings.

Anywho, I’ll have a community setup soon with details about the project, and a TestFlight release.

Posted from lemming while at work.

You could do what BaconReader did and name your app after a site meme ("France is Bacon"). How about 3DayNoPoopReader?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I read your post the other day! Hyped. Apollo is the gold standard for iOS, so excited to see what you come up with!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I’ve only used Mlem and liftoff, but so far the edge goes to liftoff just for overall feel and ease.

@ren Me as an Android user right now: staring towards nothingness and waiting to get at least a Lemmy app that looks good.

Is quite interesting that Mastodon has more Android apps than iOS ones, but Lemmy has more iOS apps than Android ones.
Like each one of them choose an OS to build their "community".

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

During the initial migration, Mastodon had a ton of iOS apps at first, but the Android apps came too! Now there's a ton of each.

On Lemmy, seeing tons of development on both OSes.

Here's a great post on a bunch in works https://lemmy.world/post/465785
