In my opinion this is the best messager for democracy. For receiving messages while offline you can use Briar mailboxes. I would highly recommend this over many other messagers.

I think you meant to say without central servers

I appreciate how light the Briar app is compared to SimpleX. I like the buetooth connectivity to exchange messages without an internet connection, I've used the bluetooth connection before. I strongly dislike that Briar uses the same ID with everywhere contact, but I can live with it. SimpleX can generate new ID for each new contact that you send a message so that you never appear the same with any 2 users.

I think the same username is needed for the trust system.

Since Briar can scan each other's QR code to add a contact, why do you say using the same name with different people make it more trustworthy when you ID can then be recorded or tracked and start to form a web of linking contacts together of who knows who?

Blogs and forms can have people who aren't in your contact list. Also it allows you to introduce two of your contacts together.

Yes, for giving contacts each other's Briar info. That's one f the reasons that I say that SimpleX can never be a total replacement for Signal. People on here push SimpleX hard for privacy and total anonymity and I agree with them, and there's been a few made up fantasies about the people who run Signal, but I see no way to ditch Signal and only have SimpleX and nothing else.

I do discourage Matrix/Element and suggest XMPP instead

How does it compare to Matrix?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

All Matrix activity is recorded permanently on servers. Yes, encrypted, but maintain a permanent copy.

I have my own server, which everyone I know uses, including the WUI.

Fuck central servers.

But who you message on Matrix has your activity as part of receieved messages

It’s much more private with less reach and convenience .

They are two different things with two different goals
