Why do people put image descriptions?
For blind users who also enjoy memes
They are also useful for people who still have sight when Lemmy is buggy and refuses to load images
Because blind people use software that reads the text of a webpage out to them audibly (or less commonly, through an RBD) but it can't read the text in an image, because it's not really "text" at all-- It's just pixels. So it'll just be like "uhh and there's a picture here, that's all I know."
So blind people would not be able to enjoy the meme, which tbh is mostly text-based anyway.
But you don't see, comrade!!!!! We must tactically support the weaker evil that is defending values even more contrary to our own in this conjuncture where they're provoking perfectly avoidable, immense human suffering!!!! If we didn't, perhaps I'd have to question if my previously held positions were actually the rational conclusion to my core philosophical values, rather than contrarian posturing!!!1!!

Hmm, I seem to remember that it was BRD and not the DDR that decided that Gay and Trans people in Nazi concentration camps had to stay there. And it was the DDR that created state ran gay bars. But no, we will continue to only compare the homophobia and transphobia of 1950's second world nations with post-2013/2017 reductions in homophobia and transphobia first world nations. It's not like Cuba is one of the most progressive nations in the world on LGBTQ rights post Family Code changes.
I've heard a lot of conflicting stuff about Cuba. I've heard it's a good place to live in but a one-party system is kinda sus.
