Wait, is this different to a driver's license, medicare card, tax file number, or mygov login?
I'd be happy to reduce the amount of times I have to deal with providing multiple forms of ID, particularly the insanity of having to get copies certified for places that then expect you to email a image of said copies (therefore defeating the whole point of a certified copy).
I am dubious that a digital ID will actually end up making things easier though, I give it pretty good odds that it'll just be an additional hoop to jump through. I also have reservations about what happens when the digital IDs are compromised, because that'll happen at some point no matter how secure the system is claimed to be.
Edit: Relevant XKCD
I also thought immediately of that xkcd. I'm glad you posted it.
I'd like an explanation of what this ID would entail and what problem it solves. At the moment with MyGov, I control my ID. I tell them my email address or phone number. Things I can change. Different government agencies can link into my MyGov ID. I think this system works well.
I don't know what is wrong with the status quo. So, I am not informed enough to argue for/against some other ID.
- Is this a ploy for Alex Antic to collect personally identifiable information?
- I’m not going to give my data to a Liberal politician (why are they called “Liberal” - the Labor party is more liberal; the “Liberal” party should change their name to “Conservative”)
- Why don’t we see what is proposed before opposing it?
a) Personally I don’t oppose the concept, but I don’t trust anyone to handle the data appropriately
b) I find the idea of locking everyone in to an Android/Apple duopoly offensive (myGovId is the perfect example of how not to implement this) — this may be the final nail that converts me to dumping my “Smart” devices and moving to a dumb phone.
Digital IDs were introduced in 2015 by the coalition.
This partition is 100% bs.
liberal doesnt mean left wing
But it… does?
compared to conservative, yes, but no real leftist would call liberals anything better than centrists
They're called liberal because they're economically liberal (low taxes, pro business), not socially liberal.
why are they called “Liberal” - the Labor party is more liberal; the “Liberal” party should change their name to “Conservative”
Liberalism is not progressivism. The US never had a popular worker's party and instead they have two liberal parties.
Our own Liberal party mirrors the US divide between the moderates (think Turnbull) and right factions (Morrison)
Yes at this point put political compasses on political websites so we know what is what
Lucky for me, I can't even get a DigitalID because it doesn't accept my doccuments
Why would you even need a digital ID? My digital driver's licence works great, accepted everywhere I go already and I've not carried a wallet for more than a year.
Transport card - digital Credit card - digital Loyalty cards - digital Drivers licence and all types of permits - digital Private health and Medicare - digital
Which place demands a physical copy of anything thesedays and moreover since it's working fine why do we need another
Thought I had seen some lawyer's opinion that if you unlocked your phone, eg to show a digital drivers license, and the police alleged criminal activity, they could seize your phone and would then be able to search through your phone
They wouldn't need a warrant to get your passcode because you unlocked it. They just happened to seize it when it was unlocked.
With phone unlocked, anyone could order food, grab an uber, buy whatever they want off Amazon and probably drain my bank account - the 2FA comes back to the phone lol.
So, for now, I have a little card that has my ID on it. It's worked really well, and I don't even need to charge it!
Think before you go digital ID for anything.
If it’s optional, decentralised and not a massive database hosted by the government to trace you then it might be a good idea. But apart from that it’s a no go to me. Argggh, I wish politicians would put their political compass test results on their site because otherwise I don’t know what I’m supporting.
This is the first step in a Chinese-style social credit system
We already have a social credit system, it's called a credit system.
I'm sure Labor will roll back the positive credit reporting laws any moment now.
I am utterly uninterested in this for a whole host of reasons. It only has potential negative side effects for me. I just don't see any benefit.
