Fist of the North Star and Akira are the only two I specifically know are from the 80's and also kick ass.

Loved this series back in the late 80s!

In a dystopic and cyberepunkish Tokyo, IA robots are getting rogue. Perhaps that pesky technological GENOM corporation has something to do with the issue.

Bubblegum Crysis (1987) Dir. Katsuhito Akiyama

Awesome aesthetics and mechanical design: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbqlEUu3sSY

Great chases and music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9_zfJ153q8

Charismatic characters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKlxIAa5Tsg

In my country several pirated episodes were distributed with adhoc subtitles and spanish dubbling. Sadly the original series was never finished, but it inspired a complete anime series under the same premise.

There is this funny cop show, "You're under arrest". (Taiho Shichauzo) It got into animation media on the mid 90s, but its based on a 80s manga.

Two female cops and many funny characters, and great vehicle chases.

I think anime animation quality peaked in the 1980s. There have been great ones before and after, but I've watched a lot from this period and I think the most impressive series (as far as animation quality goes) might be Zeta Gundam. The visual quality in a TV series is just unreal!

@xyzzy @peron

I think I would have to agree that overall the best anime comes from the 1980s. I also think there was some great stuff in the 90s and very early 2000s as well before anime started becoming a seasonal thing to watch online.
