This is my surprised face 😐 because that’s exactly what I expected to happen.

Waiting for them to rename it to XikXok

Is... China in support of the Palestinian genocide? They've been very vocally critical of Israel throughout the past year...

This is like. AmericaTok. America is the nation that engages in by far the most Palestinian genocide denialism.

Uh, the X is probably in reference to Musk-Twitter.

That was fast. Almost as if they already had an implementation in place controlling content since the start of the app.

Yeah, I'm staying on Rednote

:\

Edit: didn't know people here like rednote

[–] [email protected] 31 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Check what instance this community is on lol

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago

Oh, oops, I missed that.

I dont care about TikTok, I don't care about rednote. I'm just happy people are trying new things. I feel some people here underestimate the percentage of the people online who will avoid trying new things.

Think of how many people just have facebook and/or google be "the internet". They underestimate the things the average users will put up with to avoid having to switch services/operating systems and so on.

This is a good thing, even if they aren't going to a service you prefer.

Are there any other popular short-form content alternatives right now? Insta sucks and Loops is very much not ready yet.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 2 weeks ago

my question is why do you even need a time-sucking and addictive short video app?

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Youtube shorts? Idk, that's the only short-form video content I partake in.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Maybe redgifs.com? (nsfw) πŸ˜…

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

Can't forget about that one

Not an adjustment, it's literally always been that way.

Loops.video, or at least Bluesky.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Bluesky will meet the same fate. It's "federated" mostly in name only.

Loops is promising though, but it's obviously not polished enough or ready for mass use yet

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 weeks ago

I'm not recommending bsky, I'm just done fighting it if that's where the normies want to go.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago

anything with enough money behind it will enshitify and you'll find yourself looking for an alternative again in the future.

I just got my account yesterday.

After signing up the day before.

And I'll say, having never used TikTok, I don't actually know how they compare to each other...

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I never checked it out but the biggest issue is always content. Does Loops have a lot/good content or is it dead?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

It's still beta as far as I can tell, I wouldn't go expecting billions of users generating your entertainment for you

Tiktok has always been like this.

Their comment system is absolutely broken and actually it's probably on purpose. 90% of these comments get restored on appeal but they are already burried deep so it's very popular moderation strategy where the system relies on correction to appear safe an intelligent but the correction ends up being irrevant in the grand scale of things.

Same thing with Twitter community notes which add context when everyone already read the tweet to give an illusion of moderation and safety.

As an engineer I'm honestly very impressed by the effectivenes of this strategy β€” it's brilliant despite, you know, being evil β€” and it'll take public a while to catch up.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

It’s a problem with YouTube too. I would say that at least 40% of my comments end up removed.

They also like to rub my nose in it by sending me notifications from whatever thread I replied to.

I’d love to have a decent alternative.

Edit:

And removing the thumbs down count was very damaging, I think. You can see that 60 people support Hitler but you have to install an add on to know that 300 people didn’t agree with that garbage. It’s a mess.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

Got that server migration to Meta done in only 14 hours

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

What a surprise.
