Not strictly true. Even if a situation is hopeless, that doesn't mean that the other side can stop putting in effort. Imagine a race in which one runner is so far ahead of the others that they can't catch up to him before he reaches the finish line. He still has to keep running!
And that runner can still trip and fall. Rarely does any side avoid all mistakes
